SG-1 filed into the briefing room.
"Dr. McKay, good to see you," Mal said. He didn't know who the other man with McKay was but he nodded by way of a greeting. They hadn't been told why he and Dr. McKay were here, General Carter had simply told them to come to the briefing room. He assumed the other man was also a scientist since he and McKay were deep in conversation while they stared at something on the tablet McKay held.
"Of course it is. Blow up any outposts lately, Colonel?" McKay asked before he looked at Sam. "Are we ready?"
Mall shook his head and took a seat.
"Go ahead, Dr. McKay.
He clapped his hands together. "Dr. Zelenka and I have been working on the newest version of the 302s." He indicated the other man who waved when he was introduced. "These new ships can fly further, faster, and the hyperspace window they generate lasts longer and allows you to jump further than the previous versions." He put up an image of the ship. "These ships can carry a pilot and co-pilot but can be flown by a single pilot if necessary. This is a huge jump forward from where we were previously with the 302. The X-306 is revolutionary if I do say so." He grinned.
Mal held a hand up. "This is fascinating, but why are you telling us about this?"
"Oh, I thought Sam ..." he looked at Sam. "Didn't you tell ...?" Sam shook her head. "Oh, well then I guess I'll tell you. Our first prototype is ready for a test flight and we'd like a member of SG-1 to fly it."
Lee thrust a hand into the air. "Oh, me, me! I wanna fly it!"
"Captain Kain, I think Colonel Hughes is better suited to this mission. He has more hours in the air than you do," Sam told her. "Though I appreciate your enthusiasm."
"There's two seats!"
Van held up a finger. "I'd be more than happy to remain right here on the ground. In case anyone cares."
"Don't worry, Dr. Walsh, I know you've never flown," Sam told him with a smile. "It's settled, Colonel Hughes will fly the X-306 tomorrow morning at 0800. The Helios will be with you at the jump point and the Atlas will be at the rendezvous point at the other end of the hyperspace window."
"I can radio and let you know if things worked. We don't need the big ships to babysit," Mal told her.
"The radio is a little ...glitchy," Dr. Zelenka told him.
The man's voice carried a slight accent though he had no clue what the accent was. "Shouldn't that be fixed before we do this?"
Rodney waved a hand in the air. "Insignificant. You'll have the 305s looking out for you."
"I'd feel better if my radio wasn't glitchy," Mal said.
Sam rose. "Don't worry, Colonel, we aren't going to lose you. Dismissed."
Mal watched as McKay and Zelenka put their heads together and began whispering. Yeah, that made him feel better.
Van jumped up and went to accost Dr. Zelenka. "Are you from Czech Republic?"
The doctor smiled. "I am, how did you know?"
"The accent, I'm a linguist." The two began conversing in Czech while McKay looked put out to be left out of the conversation.
"This is not fair, I'm just as good a pilot," Lee grumbled.
"I'll be happy to trade but I don't think they'll let us." Mal gestured toward the two scientists. "Not sure how I feel about this glitchy radio business."
