Mal took a seat at the table and waited while General Carter took her seat. "I assume we're here because we have a new mission?"

"Yes, we sent a M.A.L.P. through the Gate to P8E-394." She clicked the button on the remote she held and an image appeared on the screen. "It appears the inhabitants of the planet are curious. They approached the M.A.L.P. and responded to our radio transmissions. They're very interested in meeting us. I'd like you to make contact with them."

"Sounds easy enough," Lee said.

"Let's hope so." She clicked the button again. "Once the inhabitants agreed to meet us they left the immediate area around the Gate, several minutes later the camera caught this." She clicked the button and the video image rolled forward. Seconds after it began there was a bright flash in the sky. "It appears to be weapons fire of some sort."

"So be careful and don't get shot?" Lee asked.

"Yes, Captain, exactly that. We'll check in with you every hour to make sure you're not in danger. You leave in an hour. Dismissed."

"I don't want to go into a war zone!" Van whined. "I'm not trained for war!"

"You'll do fine, Dr. Walsh. Daniel handled it well, I'm certain you will too," Sam told him.

Van nodded but he also released a small whimper.

Mal strode away from the Gate with a smile on his face for the small group of men waiting for them

Mal strode away from the Gate with a smile on his face for the small group of men waiting for them. "Hello, I'm Colonel Malachy Hughes."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, we're happy to find friends among the stars. I am Valerii Balakin, leader of my people. Welcome to Dathnya." He bowed slightly. The man was stately looking, tall and willowy. Though he was balding, he still maintained a measure of dignity about him. The men who stood around him were dressed as soldiers.

Mal maintained his smile. "It's wonderful to meet you, sir. I'd like you to mee the rest of my team. Captain Leonore Kain and Dr. Evander Walsh."

"It's lovely to meet all of you."

There was an explosion somewhere distant.

Mal frowned. "That sounded like a bomb."

"It more than likely was. We are in the midst of a war with our neighbor, Luskoyovi." He gestured at the Stargate. "We discovered the Traveling Ring several generations ago. We offered to allow them access to it but they refused. They want to control it. They have attempted on several occasions to steal it but failed each time they tried. I fear we will not be able to keep them back much longer. They have acquired new weapons from somewhere that are far advanced to what their current technology would allow them to build. We are losing the war I'm afraid."

"Perhaps we can help."

He smiled brightly. "Could you provide us with weapons?"

Mal shook his head. "No, but perhaps we could speak to them as a neutral party and help you negotiate a peace between your countries."
