Mal watched the Gate while he waited for the go ahead for the mission and the Gate to begin dialing.

Sam's voice came over the PA, "Hold up, SG-1."

Mal turned to look up at the control room. "Is there a problem, General?"

"Yes, wait a minute you have a last minute addition to your mission."

"Hey, maybe we finally got a science officer," Van said.

Mal shrugged. "I think she would tell us about that in advance, like during the briefing."

The Gate room door opened and Elias strode into the room dressed in fatigues.

Mal scowled and looked toward the control room. General Carter shrugged. He knew whoever decided that Elias was going to accompany them on this mission, it wasn't the General. He sent his brother a glare. "Why are you here?"

"Because the IOA feels that it's necessary to study your team dynamic in the field so we can make a further determination of your suitability to lead."

"Right, sure." He spun away. "Ready to go, General," he called out.

The Gate spun and the first chevron lit and locked. He ignored his brother and stared fixedly at the Gate.

Elias moved to stand beside him. "Honestly, Malachy, you act as if I've killed someone, I'm just accompanying SG-1 on a mission. One, that from all accounts, is a simple reconnaissance mission."

"Nothing is simple when you're several billion miles away from Earth. I don't care if the planet is deserted, things can still go wrong. A dozen or so years of mission reports proves that."

"It might help if someone had given me a weapon," Elias told him.

Mal turned to him. "You are here to observe. You aren't military and you are not a member of my team. You are an observer." He turned back to watch as the Gate dialed. "And I wouldn't trust you with a weapon, you'd probably shoot me in the back."

"Chevron six locked."

"Come on, you don't believe I'd do that," Elias replied.

Mal snorted. "I do. You've done it so many times metaphorically, why not make it a reality?"

"Chevron seven is locked, wormhole established."

"Good luck SG-1," Sam called out over the PA.

Mal took the lead, Lee fell into step behind him and Van hurried past Elias to walk behind Lee. Elias shook his head and followed them up the ramp. He paused at the top to reach out and prod the shimmering event horizon. "Fascinating."

"Any day now, Mr. Albrecht, we don't have all afternoon, it costs us just a little to keep the door open," Sam called out to him over the PA.

He took a step forward and passed through the event horizon. Seconds later he emerged on the other end to find the others waiting for him.

"Took you long enough. Did you have second thoughts?" Lee asked snidely. "Maybe you should have stayed home where the IOA is around to change your diaper, feed you, and coddle you."

"I suggest you behave, Captain. My orders come from a much higher place than yours."

"Really? Here I thought Satan lived below ground."

"Enough, Captain, let's move. This planet may be deserted but I don't want to take forever to search the area." Mal gestured with his P90. "You and Van go that way. Elias, you're with me."

"You think that's a good idea, Colonel?" Lee asked while eyeing Elias.

"It's fine, Kain, go."

She sent Elias a glare. "Anything happens to him and I will blame you," she told Elias and then turned away from him when Van exclaimed about a nearby carving he'd discovered. "What is it, Van?"
