"You gave me peace in a lifetime of war."

Alex's POV

Lilly was sitting in my lap, mumbling some words that felt incoherent to me at the moment. My mind is oceans away, busy thinking and worrying way more than it should. You see, God sent stress into my life in the form of a person, and since then, he has been a monumental pain in my ass, a one I can't seem to get rid of.

When I arrived there, I expected an unpleasant scene to welcome me, it is Isaac after all, he wouldn't have let him go without a fight. But nothing would've prepared me to see him in that state. Broken, both inside and out. On the ride back home, my eyes kept drifting to him upfront, even though he tried to act indifferent, fighting against the pain, he seemed to be teetering right on the edge, one step away from falling and crashing...that if he hadn't already.

It wasn't just about the physical torture, but the immense darkness that reflected in his eyes was alone proof that Isaac didn't go easy at all. He played his famous mind games again, twisting the truths and messing with his already weak brain.

"Daddy, listen," Lilly's words and her hand palming my cheek were enough to pull me out of my messy thoughts.

My gaze drifted down to her, and I nodded my head, showing her I am all in and urging her to carry on with her rambling session, "Stupid," She said, and my eyebrows pulled closer; I really missed half of her earlier conversation, "Who is stupid?" I asked and she pointed at Cara, "The man who took mommy, he is stupid," She added and I nodded, sighing loudly, "Yeah, he is a dick."

Her little eyebrows pulled closer in pure confusion, "What's a dick?"

"Alex!" Cara hissed at me, and my gaze flickered to her, my eyes widening and pulling the most innocent, clueless look, to which she shot me a cute glare in return. I looked back at Lilly, "It means massively stupid, like a huge asshole, gigantic even," I said and Cara facepalmed, if she wasn't feeding Max and trying to get him to sleep, she would've screamed at me some more, "But you're too young for that vocabs, so don't use it, okay?" I added.

She nodded her head, even though she seemed double confused. I sighed as I picked her up in my arms and walked us to the bed by Cara's side, dropping her in between us.

Cara's eyes were focused on Max in her arms, her hand caressing his head and hair ever so softly, "He is not sleeping, he just keeps looking at me," She said, a heartfelt smile curving her lips and true to her words, the boy's eyes were wide open and just staring up at her like only she existed in his world right now.

She leaned down, dropping a soft kiss over his forehead, "I think he missed me."

I nodded, "More like missed your boobs but yeah," I said, watching him go to town as she breastfed him. My words were followed by a light slap to my shoulder, shutting me up and pushing me away from my favorite scene. My gaze went up to her face, and I winked. She only narrowed her eyes at me, annoyed at how I always ruin this sweet moment.

I brought my hand up, tucking her hair behind her ear, "Of course, he missed you, he kept crying all day long, so did this one." I looked at Lilly, who was squeezed between us, unaware and going through my phone that she somehow stole from me just now. She noticed my glare and looked up, giving me a sheepish smile, and threw me a kiss, acting all innocent and not like the little devil she is.

I shook my head at her silly face and covered it fully with my hand, pushing her head into the pillow. She giggled and her legs kicked out, "Daddy!"

My gaze flickered up to Cara, who was watching Lilly and me with the happiest look in her eyes, "Told you before, we three can't function without you," I said the only truth I knew and her eyes met mine again, her lips curving up into the most beautiful smile ever before she leaned closer and pecked my lips.
