The first thought through Oikawa's mind was: Finally.
The second however: oh no.
His eyes went comically wide, staring at Iwaizumi, away from the eyes of the crowd.
Lights shone throughout the venue. His breathing stuttered.
Then, Iwaizumi looked at him, holding his gaze. His frantic eyes stared into other's fond ones. He swallowed, head shaking a little.
Iwaizumi did the most unexpected thing in return; he grinned and then turned to face the crowd once again, ". . . he fucked up not only the company but his own son as well."
Oikawa jerked forward, hand flying out in the other's direction before Iwaizumi could say something else that would follow them for the rest of their fucking lives—
Someone gripped his hand, yanking him back so fucking fast.
He jumped.
His state was panicked as he stared at Hotaru beside him, holding his hand so tight and looking straight ahead towards his only pride.
"What are you doing?" Oikawa hated that his voice shook.
"You were about to make a mistake." Hotaru said calmly, squeezing his hand.
Oikawa hissed at him, "He's going to ruin everything."
"Let him—
"You'll face the consequences."
Hotaru blinked, reaching to wipe the corner of Oikawa's eye with his other hand. He didn't realise when his eyes got teary.
"Didn't you say I deserved it?," Hotaru gave him a shrug as if none of this was a big fucking deal.
"He can't say anything—
"He's not a moron. He knows what to say."
Oikawa's eyelashes fluttered, a few more tears escaping.
"He loves you."
Oikawa squeezed his eyes shut. He had no idea why Hotaru was holding his hand still. Maybe everyone around him realised he could explode any time. He didn't understand if that was something to be proud of.
"I know you will never forgive me. I'm not asking you to. You and I are never going to be on the same team, I understand that."
"I'm not having this conversation here—
"But Hajime loves you. Uki loves you. The only two people in my life—
Oikawa couldn't help it, he scoffed, "you're delusional."
"They both love you. I'm not complaining. I'm not asking for forgiveness. We can hate each other but I'm asking for you to at least tolerate me, for their sake—
"I—
"At least let us be in the same room without so much as a scoff."
Oikawa swallowed his anger, slowly breathing out. He looked towards the one man who made all his fear wash away.
Iwaizumi spoke with a strong willed voice,
"But I'm not here to redeem my father. He was a cheating businessman, a liar. A fraud. He deserves your hatred. He broke your trust as he did mine. . .
"I restored this company's finance. This company which was on the brink of bankruptcy and with this contract, I'll pay each one of yours debt and more. I won't take a dime for myself. And these aren't empty promises.
"The year, working with Oikawa Tooru taught me incredible things. Not only is he the best in his line of work, not only is he a genius. . . He's also. . . passionate. He's loyal, he won't simply join the winning side or take the easy way out."
Oikawa blinked. This was starting to sound like a confession. He could only think about what they would print in the news tomorrow.
But on the other hand, he wanted nothing more than to take him in his arms at that very moment. His heart soared.
"He likes to bend the truth but he's honest. And most importantly, I trust him. I understand him. I want to be as accomplished as him. I want to learn. I want to do the best for this company. I want to achieve everything. . .
". . . I'm nothing like my father. I'm my own person—And for you to disrespect me without knowing who I am isn't right and I won't stand it.
We did it, you know, Me and my team. A 300 billion contract". . . I'm coming for it all. . . And I won't stop until I'm at the top."
Oikawa held his breath.
Hotaru's face was pride itself. Oikawa could tell by the way he smiled and his eyes glinted.
The crowd erupted in cheers and deafening claps. All these businessmen who scoffed at the name of Iwaizumi Hajime, the youngest businessman among them, just a year ago were now cheering for him.
Willingly.
"He's never failed to amaze me." Hotaru smiled beside him.
Oikawa took a deep breath, tilting his chin up in heartfelt pride, "I . . . I'm willing to compromise."
"Oh? I didn't expect this to be so easy—
"For him. Not for you. But I'm never going to forgive you, know that."
"Of course." Hotaru nodded, "I believe you have your conditions?"
Oikawa couldn't help the teasing smirk. The contentment was satisfying, ". . . how the tables have turned," he paused, smiling towards the other, "Mr. Iwaizumi."
Hotaru let out a laugh, shaking his head a little, "I agree, Oikawa Tooru."
Oikawa beamed, staring ahead at Hajime bowing to the loud, cheering crowd.
Hotaru continued, squeezing his hand as they both gazed at Iwaizumi Hajime, setting aside their absurd differences only for the man they were equally proud of, "It's my loss and your win, Tooru. Of course . . . I wouldn't expect anything less from a billionaire brat."
