Dry and raspy coughs racked Hoseok's body as he curled in on himself, his face ashen and covered in a thin layer of sweat from his breaking fever. He moaned in discomfort, shoving his face into the pillow.
"Hobi?" You called out, softly.
He lifted his head to look at you, your heart sinking slightly at the sight of him.
"I brought you a fresh washcloth." You told him, walking over to the bed.
You took the now warm washcloth off his forehead and replaced it with the cool one. A sigh slipped past Hoseok's lips when the chilly cloth made contact with his forehead.
You hated seeing Hoseok like this. He was usually so bubbly and full of life, now he was confined to a bed, his face pale and eyes droopy.
"Do you need anything else, sunshine?" You asked, running your fingers through his chestnut hair.
"Soup."
"Alright. I'll go get that for you."
He hummed in response as you left the room.
After stepping into the kitchen, you started going through the pantry, retrieving the ingredients for jook. You heard that rice porridge is great for anyone who is feeling under the weather like your ailing boyfriend. It would take some time to cook, but it was much better and more nutritional compared to canned soup.
First, you poured up some chicken stock in a pot and started to warm it. Then, after washing the rice, you added it to the heating chicken stock, allowing the grains to cook and absorb the flavor of the stock.
While the rice porridge simmered, you went back to the bedroom to check on Hoseok, seeing that he had his eyes closed.
"Hoseok." You whispered.
His eyes just barely opened.
"I decided to make you some jook. It'll take a couple hours to finish, maybe an hour and a half. Is that alright or would you prefer me to just heat up some canned soup?"
"Jook sounds really good. I'm willing to wait for it."
"Alright. I'll be back up to check on you."
He gave a small nod, closing his eyes once more.
Once the rice and chicken stock had simmered for an hour and a half, you added in ginger and a slab of bacon to help flavor the porridge, allowing it to simmer for another hour, making sure to check in on Hoseok every so often throughout the cooking process. Each time you did so, he was asleep. You were grateful he was able to rest, even though he wasn't feeling the greatest. Rest is the body's way of healing and repairing itself, after all.
After the rice porridge was finished, you added seasonings and garnish before giving it a little test taste. You didn't want to serve something that tasted bad. To your surprise, it was pretty good.
After giving yourself a metaphorical pat on the back, you moved to the fridge to get a drink. Since Hoseok wasn't feeling well, you decided to give him something that would be easy on his stomach like ginger ale. That was always the go-to beverage when someone is sick.
After stepping into the room, you saw Hoseok propped up on his elbow with sleepy eyes, appearing to have just woken up.
"Hey, sunshine." You greeted softly. "I hope you're hungry."
He pushed himself into a sitting position as you approached the bed.
"It's done?"
"Yes and it's nice and hot."
"Good."
You handed the porridge to him, telling him to be careful with the warm bowl and placed his ginger ale on the bedside nightstand.
"Thank you, sunflower." He gave you a weary smile.
You stood back and watched as he took a few bites, his eyes closing as he hummed in approval.
"This is really good." He told you. "It was well worth the wait."
"I'm glad. I hope it helps you feel better."
"I do too."
You watched him eat for a few more seconds before excusing yourself and leaving the room. In the meantime, you busied yourself in the kitchen, washing the few dishes that were in the sink and cleaning up any messes you made while preparing the porridge, allowing Hoseok some time to eat.
After tidying up the kitchen, you returned to the bedroom. Hoseok was sipping on the ginger ale you brought to him.
"Ah." He sighed. "This was a good choice. It really hits the spot."
"Ginger ale is always a good choice when you're sick. How was the jook?"
"It was delicious. I'm feeling better already." He smiled softly.
"I'm glad to hear that. Let me go ahead and take your dishes to the kitchen." You reached out, gathering the now empty bowl and cup.
"Could you bring me some more ginger ale, love?" He requested.
"Of course."
Returning to the kitchen, you cleaned the silverware and bowl, placing them into the dishwasher before going to refill Hoseok's glass with more ginger ale, briefly watching the carbonated bubbles float to the top.
You returned to the bedroom shortly, handing the glass to Hoseok who took a couple sips and placed the cup on the nightstand.
"Oh, I don't think I need this washcloth anymore." He mentioned.
"I'll go put it in the laundry."
It had been a while since you brought the washcloth to Hoseok, so it was a bit dry. You went to the laundry room, dropping the cloth into the towel basket and went back your bedridden boyfriend.
"Is there anything else you need?" You asked, approaching his side of the bed.
"Cuddles."
"Cuddles?" You repeated with a slightly amused smirk.
"Yeah. I think that would make me feel even better."
"Well, I can't say no to you." You smiled softly, moving around to the opposite side of the bed, sliding under the covers with him.
Hoseok immediately scooted over towards you, wrapping an arm around your waist.
"How do you feel?" You asked, running your fingers through his hair.
"Much better, actually. I've had time for my fever to go down, plus I had a nap, and that rice porridge you made was delicious."
"I'm so glad to hear that. I hate seeing you sick."
"And I hate being sick."
You let out a short, breathy chuckle. "You're on the road to getting better. Maybe tomorrow you'll be able to walk around without feeling fatigued."
"That would be great."
You brushed his bangs back away from his face and pressed a gentle, loving kiss to his forehead before resting your head on the pillow. Hoseok scooted a little closer, laying his head on your chest with one arm draped over your midriff. Your eyes closed as your body relaxed into the mattress, enjoying the feeling of being so close to Hoseok. Relaxation settled over you as you slowly began to drift off, your boyfriend's quiet breathing lulling you to sleep.
