I can't do this. You thought, standing before the weathered door of the timeworn mansion.
Having a keen interest in old buildings, you thought it would be fun to explore the dilapidated and abandoned home that sat beyond a rusted gate just outside of town, however now that you were standing on the front porch you were beginning to get nervous, your palms starting to sweat.
Fighting your fears, you reached for the doorknob only to retract your hand and shake your head.
I can't.
Before you could back away, the door opened on its own, creaking in response to the movement. You stood staring at the door that was now agape, all hesitancy leaving you and being replaced with curiosity.
"Well, now I have to go in." You spoke under your breath, taking a step into the house.
It was dark, the dull and overcast evening sky outside not providing much light to the insides of the structure.
The air smelled of old candles, the scents still fragrant, but with an undertone that told you they had been sitting for a long time much like everything in the house. Your feet moved tentatively across the floor, the old boards creaking softly under your weight.
Suddenly, the fireplace came to life, flames surrounding the partially burned pieces of wood inside. The sound of chair legs scraping against the floor followed just a moment after. When you turned to look at who moved the piece of furniture no one was there.
At first, the idea of exploring the dilapidated structure intrigued you, but now that things were moving on their own you were starting to get scared—very scared. To make things worse, you could have sworn you heard the floorboards creaking, as if someone was lurking in the shadows, moving about the house under the cover of darkness.
Your first and only thought was ghost and that was enough to send a shiver down your spine.
"Who are you?"
You jumped at the voice, spinning around on your heel to find a silhouette standing off in the shadows, the startling sight making you shiver slightly. You couldn't even see the man's face, but his presence was so powerful it made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.
He stepped forward out of the darkness and revealed himself, the dim late evening light seeping through the windows illuminating his striking features. You swallowed, your voice stuck in your throat.
Suddenly, the man was standing in front of you, his curious gaze scanning you up and down as he circled you.
"You're a human." He noted aloud, his crimson irises gleaming with interest.
You were unable to answer his earlier inquiry, your entire body was frozen in fear, your mouth unable to move. It was clear that this man wasn't like you, he was something else and the way he was looking at you made it felt like you were prey being hunted by a ferocious beast ready to attack at any moment.
"It has been decades since someone entered my home." He spoke. "Why are you here?"
"I..." Your voice faltered, fading out.
Your throat was extremely dry all of a sudden, your mind coming up with too many scenarios, every single one ending with you getting your throat ripped out.
His pierced brow raised in expectancy as he awaited your answer, his crimson irises scanning your face which only made you more nervous.
"I like to explore old, abandoned houses." You managed to squeak out weakly.
The man before you let out a chuckle, one of his fangs making a brief appearance, inciting more fear in you. "As you can see, this house is not abandoned."
Yeah. That much was obvious.
"What's your name?" He inquired.
There was no way you were answering that.
"There's no reason to be afraid." He took a step towards you and you took a step back, throwing a quick glance over your shoulder at the door.
It was a straight shot from where you stood. If you ran you might make it out.
The man, who was more perceptive than you thought, noticed the way you eyed the door. "You are not thinking about leaving, are you?"
You shook your head vigorously.
Yes you were.
"Have a seat." He gestured to the sitting area.
"No thank you." You turned his offer down meekly.
His brows pulled together and he noticed you take another step back.
"Please do not leave."
Your plans to make a speedy getaway were put to a temporary halt as you took notice of the slight desperation in his voice.
"I lit the fire for you and pulled up a chair."
That was him?
He fiddled nervously with the ruffles on his sleeves when you didn't speak. "Did I frighten you? I did not mean to."
You were taken aback by the gentle look in the man's eyes and the way he was almost pleading for you to stay.
"I do not get visitors here." He continued. "In fact I have not spoken to another person in a very long time. Forgive me for my lack of social skills."
