A huff of exasperation slipped past your lips as you flopped down on your couch which was surrounded by empty and half empty boxes.
You got accepted to one of your dream universities and had to move to a completely different city halfway across the country. It was a big change, but one you were excited for. You were looking forward to this new chapter in your life.
Thankfully, you got a scholarship which would help pay for your schooling, not only that, but you were able to find a cozy apartment with a somewhat decent rent. It was a little on the expensive side, but nothing you couldn't handle... for a little while, anyway. A plus was that there was a bakery right beside your apartment building, which would be perfect for buying a coffee or pastry on your way to college.
The school year was just over a week away, ten days to be exact, which gave you some time to unpack and get settled before the fall semester started.
You took a moment to search up nearby restaurants that delivered, in desperate need of some food. The energy you had from breakfast that morning had been burned unpacking. One room you had successfully put together was the bathroom. As for the rest of the apartment, only a few things had been put in their rightful places. After calling in an order, you got back to work, deciding to finish unpacking the boxes for your bedroom.
By the time the food arrived, you had all the boxes in your room emptied and stacked up in a corner. At this point, you were more than ready for a meal.
It took you a few days to get completely settled, but once you did, you felt a huge sense of relief. Since you'd already been staying in the apartment for about four days, you'd gotten used to the new environment. Since you were settled, you thought it would be a good idea to stop by the bakery next door and see if you liked it.
Jin's feet dragged against the pavement as he sluggishly made his way to the bakery, dreading the day ahead. He was so incredibly tired and wanted nothing more than to return home and curl up on his warm bed. He had to keep reminding himself that he's co-owner and he promised his friend, the owner, that he would help prepare pastries before the shop opened since they don't have any employees yet.
He worked in the kitchen and got desserts made for the day: cupcakes, pastries, scones, and cake pops. Placing them carefully in the display case, he made sure they looked neat and orderly before going and flipping the sign to open. It wasn't long after he stepped behind the counter that he heard the bell ring, signaling the entrance of a new customer.
Sighing internally, Jin faced the front, putting on a smile.
"Welcome." He barely got the greeting out when his gaze met yours.
It felt like the breath was immediately knocked out of him.
"Hello." You responded, your voice sounding so gentle.
"How can I help you?"
You glanced at the menu on the wall before ordering a coffee and a pastry. He decided to strike up a conversation while he got your order ready.
"So, do you live nearby?"
"I do now. Just moved in the apartment building next door a few days ago."
"What brings you to town?"
"I moved here for college, actually. I start in six days."
"Congratulations. What's your major?"
"Marketing."
"Ah. That's a good field to work in."
"So I've heard. You know, I was kind of excited when I saw there was a bakery next door. This will be the perfect place to stop on my way to college."
The two of you talked for another minute or two until your order was ready. You paid for your items and waved goodbye to the cute barista who you now know as Jin, thanks to his name tag.
Suddenly, Jin was thankful he was the one who opened that day, watching you walk out with hearts in his eyes.

College started and you made it a habit to stop by the bakery every morning to grab a beverage or a sweet snack to get your day started. You even started stopping there after college just to chat with Jin. Somewhere along the way, you exchanged numbers so you could chat even when you weren't at the bakery. One day while you were there, you got to meet the owner, Kun, who was a few years younger than Jin, but you never would have known.
