Dear Jesus,
I had dropped my matric regalia and submitted my own oath form into my file at the department.
I was just weaving my way out of the crowd of students to the door, imagining my fluffy bed and pillows beckoning and waiting for me in my room, when I heard his voice call me.
Instinctively, I flinched but soon regained my composure. I resisted the urge to bolt away. Clutching the tote bag draped across my shoulders tighter, I maintained my normal pace with a great deal of conscious effort.
"Radiance, wait up!"
'Oh dear! Lord, help!' I internally screamed.
I pretended not to have heard and continued to walk forward.
Many students, most of them my course mates, were still out here in celebration mode.
It was still early evening and I didn't want gossip to start flying again.
I mean, what if, unexpectedly, Mike goes on his knees and begins to serenade me and then the 'paparazzi' bring out their phones to start videoing?
He soon trotted up to my side, and of course, out of courtesy, I had to wait.
Rapid pants came out of his nose and parted mouth as he hunched over to catch his breath.
His normally sand-brown hair was gelled in a simple style. I also noted how nice he looked in his attire.
"Radiance!" he called again, this time in a soft baritone.
I stroked my heart, like I would a puppy's fur, to stop its wild Brownian motion.
"You've been ignoring me like I've got leprosy since that day."
I just looked at him with a blank face and blinked like I didn't get what he meant.
He sighed and straightened as he ran his hand through his hair. The muscles on his torso flexed.
The movement was perfectly natural but I couldn't explain why my heart skipped.
I looked away, now wondering why he looked so appealing.
'God, help! Gloria, where are you?'
"Look! I'm sorry for all the insults you've received because of me. I didn't intend to make you my enemy. I like you Radiance. And if you don't want to be my girlfriend, I must say I'm hurt because no girl has ever resisted my charm"-I rolled my eyes. yeah, right-"but no problems. We can remain as friends. You know, a team, like we were for the project."
Dear God, give me strength and wisdom.
All I heard in my spirit was, 'Thou shall not be afraid for the terror by night nor for the arrow that flies by day.'
I took a deep breath of courage before replying him. I picked my words carefully and tried to make my speech as steady as possible.
"It's okay, Mike. And I also apologize for my cold attitude to you. It's just that I have standards. I'm here for school, not any petty game of lust."
He gave me a skeptical look with corked eyebrows. I knew immediately what he was thinking.
"And also, I just wanted to straighten out some stuff. What I said the other time about me being engaged. Um, actually, I was talking in spiritual terms. It means I have dedicated my spirit, soul and body to my Lord and Friend, Jesus Christ. Until the man He has chosen for me comes, I'm not going to defile myself by testing the waters. So, yeah... I just wanted to clear that part."
He let out an amused chuckle and shook his head like he couldn't believe the fairytale he just heard.
"Seriously, you don't cease to amaze me. That day, I was surprised by your speech. I didn't see an engagement ring on your finger and I thought it quite unfair that your betrothed"-He made funny air quotes as he said that-"could afford an expensive Harley bike but couldn't even get his girl a simple ring."
