Home Again

Dear Jesus,

I must have slept for not less than four hours because when I stirred awake, I could already spot some familiar landmarks, that signified that we were fast approaching home, zapping fast through the window.

I adjusted my glasses properly, not believing my eyes.

So soon?
To me, it seemed like I had napped for just four minutes.

Yes, it was already very late-my phone's screen showed 10:47 pm, but the town I had grown up in still bustled with life and activity, especially in the neon-glowing commercial centres.

I yawned and stretched silently, shaking off the grogginess I felt.

My head felt stiff, but at least, I didn't dream of another nightmare, so I could say it was the most peaceful sleep I had had in days. This was rather ironic because I was lying in a cramped position in the back seat of my parents' car.

I adjusted my posture and removed the earpieces from my ear. The audio Bible was still on, currently droning out Psalms 108.
I paused it.

My movement must have notified my mom because I heard her say, "You awake?"

I looked up and noticed her gaze through the rear mirror.
She quickly fixed her attention back to the road and that was when I realized that she was the one in the driver's seat. Dad was sleeping beside her, looking worn out.

"Uh-huh..." I responded, nodding my head.

"That's good. We should be home in less than an hour."

In the meantime, I checked my phone again and saw that I had received a reply from Uluir and a message from Portia.

Uluir: Oh my God! No wonder I had felt an unusual urge to pray for you this morning. Thank God for protection. The devil has lost the battle already. Please help me greet your parents. I wish you the quickest recovery.

I swiftly sent her a reply.

I will. Thank you, ma.

The tick sign by my message revealed that she was online and had read my message.

Uluir: Have you gotten home already?

I typed fast.

No. But soon.

Uluir: We'll chat better tomorrow. I have to continue my studying. Make sure you rest well, dear. Good night Radiance of God.

I smiled and sent her a goodnight sticker with lots of love.

I opened Portia's message, really surprised as this was the first time she was sending me a message.

It was a two-word memo. No biggie.

Portia: Be well.

Ouch?
I stared at it for a while. Thinking up a suitable reply to send.

Tell her you love her. That I love her.

I scoffed at the ridiculous thought and shook my head.
Jesus, that would be like telling a night bat that he was loved by the sun.

At last, I settled for something simple but nice.

Thank you, Portia. I will miss you. Take care of yourself.

By the time I looked back up, we were already at the entrance Shalom-Eloh Estate. Everything was pin-drop quiet already.

It was a big wonder that they allowed us in because the main entrance was always off-limits for any movement from 10 pm.

Mommy used my 'emergency situation' as a viable excuse and because we were quite well known by the security guard in charge, he understood and let us in.
