This year had been so far the most exciting one since you attended Hogwarts. Not that the other years had been boring, you had to deal with a Basilisk not even two years ago, but the Triwizard Tournament was way more fun than anything else you had ever experienced. Even though it would have been way more fun if Harry didn't, as always, somehow managed to get in trouble. Even though he did not only survive stealing the golden egg from the dragon but also being first place for now, there were still two tasks left which would be at least as dangerous as the first one and you agreed with the others that whoever sneaked his name into the goblet of fire didn't want to do Harry a favour. Still, you were trying your best to enjoy the hurly-burly, coming along with your school accommodating students of the two other schools that were participating in this tournament. And Harry assured Hermione and you there was no need to worry, because he was really close to find out what the terrible screaming you could hear any time, he opened the golden egg, meant.
For now there was a way more difficult problem for him to solve, at least that's what he thought when Professor McGonagall was standing in front of the students of her house and announced that as a part of the Triwizard Tournament they would be also hosting the Yule Ball, a formal dance held on Christmas Eve. While Hermione and you were whispering in excitement, just like the other girls, most of the boys didn't seem to like the idea of attending a ball. As professor McGonagall asked you to get on your feed and finding a partner to practice the most common set-pattern dances, most of the girls got up in no time, while most of the boys were still sitting in their chairs, not daring to be the first one to stand up. Surprisingly it was Neville who was the to buck up and started dancing. And his courage paid off because even though you, if you were honest, didn't expect him to, he did great. At the end of the lesson, he was the only one who managed to actually dance with his partner without stepping on their toes. Harry and Ron unfortunately didn't do as well as Neville and at the end of the lesson Hermione and you, who had both danced with both of the boys, were pretty sure, you had at least one or two broken toes. You were praying that, whoever you would go to the ball with, would be a better dancer than them or at least would practice in the remaining weeks until the Yule Ball.
And this was also the most common subject of discussion in the next days. But while most of the girls were really excited about the ball, wondering about who would ask them and what they would be wearing, most of the boys, especially in your year, didn't seem to have any eagerness for asking someone out. Most of the time they were staring at you awkwardly and looking away as soon as your gaze met theirs. Obviously, Hermione and you were also wondering about who might would ask you out. Hermione was secretly hoping Ron would ask her, but he didn't make any afford to do so. And with each day passing, she seemed to be more and more upset about it. "But why does he has to ask you? If you want to go with him, why don't you ask?", you asked a few days after the first dancing lesson. "Could you imagine his reaction?", she snapped back. "He would be way too smudged about it. Also, I don't want him to think I'm desperate." And you had to admit, it was very likely that Ron would make some kind of comment about the situation that would probably making Hermione regret she ever wanted to go with him.
But you remained with a similar problem as your best friend. There was a boy you got on mind as a date for the ball, yet you knew, he probably wouldn't ask you out. You knew Draco Malfoy since you were a child, your father was one of the Hogwarts Governors, working together with Draco's father in the Ministry of Magic. When you were younger, you used to be friends but when you came to Hogwarts, things changed. Still, Draco and you got along pretty well, at least compared to the other members from Gryffindor and Slytherin but since you were friends with Harry, his archenemy, Hermione, a mudblood and the Weasleys, a bunch of blood traitors, you also got to see the ugly side of Draco Malfoy. When you saw him in school, in company of some of your or his friends, you mostly ignored each other. The comments he made about your friends made you sick and you had let him know how you felt about it, several times. Yet, whenever you met outside the school and there were no other Gryffindors or Slytherins in sight, he was one of the most genuine persons you ever met and you admired him for it. That also might be the reason, why, since you visited the Malfoys with your father during the Christmas break last year, you had developed a small crush on the youngest heir of the family. But as you got back to school and saw the way he was dealing with your friends you knew that he was still and idiot and that, whatever you were feeling for him now, would never be more than that and that these feelings would probably disappear again soon. And they did, even though any time you saw him again, being the nice and polite person he was whenever he was dealing with the acquaintance of his father and their families, there was a small voice inside your head, telling you, he was in fact not only not so bad but actually a very handsome person. But whenever you caught yourself thinking like that you reminded yourself that it didn't matter what you were feeling for him. Because you knew that even if you would have feelings for him, exceeding the feelings of just liking him, he would never return those feelings. Because even if he wasn't as mean to you as he was to your friends and even if this wasn't just due to the fact that you were your father's daughter, you couldn't imagine Draco Malfoy having this kind of feelings for anyone, especially you. So you were pretty aware of the fact that even if a part of you would have loved to go to the ball with Draco, dancing with him for hours while the world around you vanished, you would need someone else to ask you.
