The resurrected warriors went off on orders from Ela and we had broken off from Skurge, leaving him in the throne room. We walked the halls in silence, neither of us knowing what to say to the other. It had been milenias since we last saw each other, since we last talked.
It was our first time alone with each other. The air was almost awkward. Someone I had once been so close with, now almost seemed like a stranger. Yet I still knew everything about her. I knew what was going through her brain. I knew her to her core, but it was difficult to talk to her. The comfortable atmosphere between us was gone. Breaking the ice would be hard, after all these years.
Ela seemingly led the way choosing the turns we would take, but I didn't pay too much attention to where we were going or where we were. Never did I imagine how difficult it would be to speak to her again. What would one say to someone after not seeing them for over a millenia.
"You've changed since I last saw you."
I glanced over towards Ela as she spoke. Was I different to her? I didn't feel different. Was it a bad difference? Did I no longer fit into our dynamic? My eyes locked on Ela's as she tried to read me.
"It's not a bad thing." Ela smiled softly, causing the worry in my head to faint slightly. "It would be odd if you didn't. It's been forever."
"You're different too." I looked down the hallway as I spoke. "A little more action now and clean it up later, but you're pretty much the same as before."
"You seem less trusting." Ela started as we rounded a corner. "Like before when we had to take on the army, you seemed hesitant to help. Why? You know me and know you can trust me no matter what. I meant what I said, before I was banished."
"I know I can." I traced the sculptures on the walls with my eyes. "Midgard wasn't so kind to me when it came to being able to trust people. There were only a few people I could ever trust."
"Midgard?" Ela stopped walking and I turned to face her. "That's where he sent you?"
"Yeah, he thought it would be a learning experience. Something about learning that the people around you are affected by your actions or something." I looked towards Ela, who seemed shocked. "Why? Where'd he send you?"
"Hel. Left me destined to rule, alone, for as long as he lived." Ela signed as she started to walk again. "I tried to escape but he sent the Valkyries to keep me at bay. He gave them the order to kill me, so I had to fight our friends, had to kill them or they would've killed me."
I paused walking. Something in her voice was off. Had she changed more than I thought. She killed our friends. We fought side by side with the Valkyries. They were strong and she killed them all. Ela paused and turned back to face me and raised an eyebrow.
"Did he send no one after you?"
"No." I shook my head and started walking again. "I did have to kill people, though. The people of Midgard didn't take my curse all that well. Called me a witch, sent armies after me. Some even considered me the devil."
"I had no idea he cursed you." Ela stated silently, after a moment of silence.
"It's not that big of a deal." I glanced towards her as she continued to face forward. "He stripped me of my powers and made it so I could never die. It's kind of fitting since, I'm the goddess of-"
I trailed off as Ela's eyes locked on mine. They were full of hatred towards her father. It was almost terrifying how scary her eyes were. Her green eyes flashed with something I couldn't figure out as she looked away.
"The mortals on midgard," Ela paused searching for the right words. "He made you watch them die over and over, and on top of that made it so you couldn't save them?"
I hummed as I looked down, not wanting to tell her the full story but she had gotten it spot on. Odin knew exactly what to do, to make it so I would suffer, so I would be forced into questioning everything. In the end, I've always returned to the same conclusion. Ela was my family, the only person I could ever truly trust.
I felt Ela's hand wrap around mine, before I realized she had stopped walking. I glanced down at her hand wrapped around mine, before my eyes rose to meet hers. I saw pity in her face as she squeezed my hand slightly.
"We'll make him pay for what he did, even if he's already dead." Ela voice was unusually dark as she spoke.
"And how would we do that?" I raised an eyebrow confused on how Ela planned to get back at a deadman.
"We turn Asgard into what he always wanted, we do what he never could." Ela paused her eyes locked on mine. "Even if we have to destroy all of Asgard and rebuild it from nothing, we'll turn Asgard into the strongest realm. We'll be the strongest queens out there. No one will ever be able to meet our greatness and we'll do it all together."
I hesitated slightly. Something about her reminded me of Ultron. Was this still really my Ela? She seemed so different. She still looked the same, but she didn't act the same. She seemed different. Almost too different.
Her eyes locked on my pleading for my answer. She still had the same face and the same facial expressions. She was still my Ela, she had to be. I don't know what I would do if she wasn't. It had always been me and her since the day we met. I couldn't give up on her, it was impossible. This was still my Ela and I'd stay by her side for the rest of my life and so with a small smile growing on my face, I answered her.
"It's always going to be you and me against the world, no matter what, I promise."
