Bronwyn has abandoned her cup of coffee and is now sitting on my bed while I stand in front of my open closet. Clothes are thrown on the bed next to her as she denies each outfit I pull out. "That pink top is nice." I sigh in relief. "Thank you-"
"But not nice enough. Next." I pull out a dark blue skinny jeans. "This?" She swats it away. "Skinny jeans are so last season. Who even wears jeans to a party?" I pull out a ripped jeans. "No. What did I just say about the jeans?"
"This is why I shouldn't go. I don't have any clothes that you approve of."
"You should. Your mom is a fashion designer for fucks sake. Alright, let's head to my room and I'll give you something to wear."
She takes my hand and pulls me out my room into hers. "What if your clothes don't fit me?" I ask. "They will. Trust me." She opens her closet. Her room is much different than mine. She has black curtains instead of blinds and the walls are covered with posters of rock bands and Megan Thee Stallion. Her bed spread is dark blue with jellyfish printed on it.
She has a vanity desk with loads of makeup scattered across the surface. "I think I found the one." She holds up a dark red dress with a heart cut out just below the chest that must end below the navel. It doesn't look too bad.
"Put it on." I undress out of my uniform and take the dress from her. "Take off your bra."
"What?"
"Take it off or it won't fit with the dress." I look at her in horror. "But-"
"No one will notice." This is why I don't go to parties cause they have such a ridiculous dress code. She stares at me expectantly. "It's either that or you go with your shit clothes and be the laughing stock." I take my bra off and slip the dress on. It clings to my body but it's not too tight. The dress ends mid - thigh and my chest is barely covered, exposing a lot of cleavage. "I can't. It's too much."
Bronwyn has her phone out. Is she taking pictures? She has a proud smile on her face. "You literally look so gorgeous right now. You have to wear it, please Quinn."
I stand in front of her mirror and admire the way the dress clings nicely to my body, showing off my curvy figure. "I feel so out of my skin but I'll wear it." She fist pumps the air. "Yes! Now wear these black strappy heels." She points to a pair of heels at the bottom of her cupboard which I take out and put on.
It's a bit tight but I don't complain. "Will you do our makeup?" She asks. I nod. At least it's one thing I'm good at.
While I start with my face and hair, she looks for an outfit to wear. "What time does the party start?" I question, closing one eye to do a winged eyeliner. "At eight." I check her phone for the time and see it's almost half past seven.
"But don't worry. Parties never start at the given time." She says before I can say anything. She's fully dressed now and she looks absolutely amazing.
She's wearing a silver crop top with an open cut out that goes straight down the chest. Her belly ring glints in the light. She has a white flare pants on with cut outs on both sides of her hips and silver strappy heels. "Wow." I say.
"Cool right?"
"Stunning. You look amazing." I compliment. She shrugs. "It's an old outfit. Not too fancy." After I finish my makeup and hers, I let my hair out of the bun and leave it loose. "I'm so jealous of your hair. It's so long." She says as she runs a brush through my black strands.
She ties her braids into a ponytail with a lone braid framing each side of her face. She insisted that I put on her usual dark look even though she looks so much better without a lot of eyeliner and eyeshadow.
"Should I call an Uber now?" I ask. "Yeah. Then we can take pictures while we wait."
I was hoping to eat instead but I call an Uber and we take tons of pictures together. She gets me to stand against my closed bedroom door and pose while she snaps a few. "You're literally so gorgeous. Everyone will have their eyes on you."
"I hope not." I say softly. There's a hoot outside and I grab my phone but Bronwyn stops me. She has a pearl necklace in her hand and a cute gold necklace in the other. "Put the gold one on." She tells me as she puts the pearl one on.
We finally make it into the small blue car before we drive off with both of us in the backseat.
Before I know it, we're pulling up in front of a two - storey house with about ten cars in the yard, all looking shiny and brand new. I take some cash out of my purse and hand it to the driver before Bronwyn and I get out. I hear loud rap music playing and I almost wince. Bronwyn puts her hand on my lower back and leads me to the front door. I raise my hand up to knock but she pushes the door open and I see people everywhere.
We weave our way through the crowd and pass the bodies. People are continuously bumping into me as they dance in a suggestive manner. We make our way to the huge kitchen that must be the size of my and Bronwyn's room merged. I can't help but gape as blue led lights come in patterns across the beige walls. Bronwyn takes the gin bottle and pours some in two glasses before pouring tonic water and giving it to me which I sip lightly.
I honestly imagined there to be less people, I mean come on, we're not in college anymore. Bronwyn sways her hips to the beat of the music and I stand there awkwardly under a few gazes.
Out of habit, I keep pulling my dress down and Bronwyn swats at my hands a few times. She's now on her sixth drink and I'm still on my second. I don't know how long we've been here but it feels like forever as she dances in the kitchen. She checks her phone multiple times before she says, "My boyfriend is finally here. Come on." She beckons me to follow her and I do but I'm confused. Boyfriend? I never knew she had one.
We walk out the kitchen to a large circle of boys. Bronwyn walks to a guy with short hair dyed the exact same colour of her blue. He has quite a gentle face and his face lights up when he sees her. "Babe, how've you been?" He smiles at her warmly before wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her in for a hug.
I'm shocked at how gentle and affectionate he is toward her. None of her past boyfriends ever held her like that. "I'm alright. This is my friend and roommate, Quinn." I smile and wave, feeling comfortable in his presence. "Hey Quinn. It's nice to finally meet you. I'm Tobias."
"Nice to meet you as well." Him and Bronwyn immediately get into conversation and add me in as much as they can. Tobias is literally so perfect for Bronwyn. The guys she brings over are loud and weird and almost always drunk and turned on.
As time passes and Bronwyn gets more drunk, her and Tobias start making out and I excuse myself to give them privacy, although I doubt they heard.
I make my way upstairs after I leave my cup in the kitchen. I'm glad to not feel the bass from the music in my body as the music gets muffled. I'm hoping to find an empty bathroom so I can touch up on my hair and makeup. All the doors look the same and I don't just want to open any door. Thankfully I find a bathroom but before I can open the door, I hear someone vomiting.
I roll my eyes before looking at the other doors. One of these rooms has to be an en suite. I make my way to the last door and open it before stepping in.
I cover my mouth when I turn around. I'm in a baby room. The walls are painted a light pink with flower designs all over. There's a crib in the middle next to a window. There are stuffed animals above the railing of the small white curtains and a baby mobile above the crib.
There's a changing table and drawer on my right. There definitely doesn't seem to be a bathroom in here. I turn around to open the door but a sound stops me. I pause before turning back around and walking closer to the crib.
I gasp at the sight of a baby in there.
