The vibration of my phone disturbs me. I feel the vibration through my head and I lift my head up off the pillow to answer my phone. I open my eyes slowly and look at the caller id. It's an unknown number and my heart jumps into my throat. It could be Corbin.
I ignore it and place my phone on my bedside table before laying on my pillow again. My phone stops vibrating before it starts again and I groan.
I pick my phone up and answer it. "What do you want?"
"Hey Quinn. You alright?" I recognize Ji's voice and I let out a sigh of relief. "Yeah I'm fine. I thought you were someone else."
"I hope you don't mind me calling you. I got your number from Lucky."
"It's alright." I don't even remember ending the call with Lucky and falling asleep. I must've been really out of it. "I stopped by at your work but you weren't there."
"What?" Of course I won't be at work. It's too early. I take a peek at my window. The curtains are open and I hear the buzz of cars passing outside. There aren't this many cars in our neighborhood in the morning. I take my phone away from my ear and look at the screen. My eyes nearly bulge out my head.
"Oh no! It's twelve pm. I'm late for work!" I exclaim. I had no idea I slept that long. Why didn't my alarm go off? And why didn't Bronwyn wake me up?
"Quinn, slow down." I hear Ji say and I put the phone back to my ear. "I have to get ready. I overslept." I tell him as I sit up and put my slippers on. "Quinn, listen to me. Lucky said you're going through a rough time. That's why I phoned you, to check up on you. You don't have to go to work. She's got you covered."
"But I have to. Or I'll be in trouble."
"Your manager can't do shit to you. Not while I'm around. Relax, okay? Take the day off. In fact, I was hoping you'd hang out with me today. I'm in the mood for ice cream, I hope you are too."
I shake my head. "I'm sorry, I can't-"
"Quinn, baby, you can. I wanna make sure you're alright. I wanna see that beautiful smile on your face. Come with me, Quinn." He pleads and I can't ignore the way my heart flutters at the nickname. Did he say that by accident or did he mean to say that?
I don't know if I can spend my time having fun when my mom is in danger. What if Corbin shows up? I still remember Ji's words to me before I saw Corbin.
He said he's fallen for me. Could he really mean that? Right now, I'm going through the worst time of my life but it couldn't hurt to hang out with him just this one time. I need a break from everything anyway. "Is this a date?" I ask. He chuckles. "Yeah, since the last one didn't work out that well."
"Do I have to wear anything nice?"
"No. You could show up in a hotdog costume and I'd still think you're the most gorgeous girl in the world." I can't help but chuckle. "In the world?"
"In the world."
I finish showering and dressing and it's half past twelve. Bronwyn isn't in her room. She must be out with Tobias. I end up wearing ripped jeans and a blue Looney Tunes sweater with pumps. I don't bother putting makeup on and I leave my hair loose. Before I leave, I get one slice of bread and spread jam on it before eating it.
Ji messaged me and told me he's outside so I go outside. When I'm outside, I see his white car and Leo's orange car. I tell Ji to hold on before I go to Leo's car. The driver seat is pushed back and I see him asleep in the seat.
I can't believe he's actually staying watch outside my apartment. I tap on the window and his eyes open. He looks around confused before his eyes land on me. He rolls the window down. "Hey, you okay?" He asks. I nod. "I'm going out. You don't have to stay watch here." I tell him. He nods. "Hold on." He rummages around for something in the back seat before he pulls out a small note and a pen. He writes something down and hands it to me. "My number. Call me if anything happens." I nod. "I will."
