It's quite a drive and just looking out the window at all the buildings we pass is enough sightseeing for me.
We stop at a café called Coffee Wave which is right next to the beach, giving us a perfect view of the blue ocean and the waves that crash along the shore. We decide to sit outside and I can immediately smell the seawater and it brings me a feeling of nostalgia. I haven't been to the beach in years and I'm enjoying the view.
A waitress with beautiful short ginger hair, freckles littering her nose and cheeks and green eyes approaches our table, asking for our order. I ignore the way she shows her cleavage at Ji and tries to send him flirty smiles.
"Welcome to Café Wave. I'm Jenna and I'll be your waitress." She says in a Scottish accent as she winks at Ji. My mom rolls her eyes and I stifle a giggle.
She places a menu in front of each of us and flashes Ji another smile before she walks away.
"What a pick me girl." Says my mom and Ji bursts out laughing while I stare at my mom in horror. "Mom! You can't say that." I hiss, hoping Jenna didn't hear her. "Nah, your mom's right. She was practically drooling all over me." Answers Ji and I shake my head as the two of them laugh together.
It's quite a sight to see them laughing together. My mom didn't like my ex boyfriend that much and I can't blame her. Although Ji isn't my boyfriend either. He's just a friend. After they finish laughing, my mom looks at the menu. "What are you guys getting?"
Just then Jenna arrives and I notice that she applied a coat of ruby red lipstick on her lips to make a statement. "What will you have to drink?" She asks, whipping out a notepad and a pen. "I'll have a latte please." Says my mom. "I'll take a chai latte." Answers Ji. I look at the menu and finally decide on a chocolate milkshake.
"Millshake?" Asks Ji, chuckling at me. I nudge him softly. "Shut up."
"It's cute." He says and both Jenna and I freeze. My mom chuckles, looking at the waves, pretending not to listen. Jenna walks away and Ji smiles at me and his gaze makes it hard to look away.
"You seriously look beautiful today. That skirt looks good on you." He compliments and I feel my face flush. "Really? It's a bit tight around my hips." I tell him softly, not wanting my mom to hear. "Shit Quinn. That's what makes it look so sexy on you." His hand falls to my thigh and his touch heats my whole body up.
"The beach is one of my favourite places. That's where your dad and I met." I immediately turn my attention to my mom, wanting to hear more. She's still watching the waves and the people passing by. Her gaze is faraway though. She doesn't speak about my dad at all and I never met him. He died in an airplane crash before I was born.
I asked her once when I was four and she told me he died and that I shouldn't worry about him cause I have her. It's very rare to hear her mention his name and I wonder if he did anything to hurt her or maybe she's trying to forget him and move on.
I really want to know more about him. I want to at least know what he looked like, what he liked, what I inherited from him. "Really? How did it happen?"
Of course, Jenna picks the perfect time to arrive with our drinks, placing a tray on the table and placing our drinks in front of us. "Are you ready to order food?" She asks, pulling her notepad out.
My mom scans the menu one more time. "Can I get two eggs, both hard, with chips and two slices of brown toasted bread."
"I'd like a chicken and mayo sandwich." I say. "Are you sure?" Both Ji and my mom ask at the same time. I nod. "I'm paying so you can order whatever you want." Says Ji. "You don't have to pay. I can pay." I say. His hand goes back to my thigh. "It's the least I can do. You're sharing your house with me remember?" He adds softly.
