I'm woken up by a baby's cry. A light immediately turns on, blinding me in the process and I rub my eyes. "Shit. Sorry, Lumi must be hungry." Once I rub my eyes and adjust to the bright light, I see Ji on a mattress next to the bed. "What time is it?"
He grabs his phone off the dressing table. "Two minutes past midnight."
"I slept for that long?" He nods. "You were out. I'm gonna get Lumi." He gets up and walks out the room while I grab my phone that's on the table next to me. It needs to be charged. I look at some messages I've received. One from Bronwyn telling me to sleep well. A similar one like that from Lucky.
There's one from my mom asking for the address of Ji's house. She must've landed already and I see that the message was sent about thirty minutes ago. I type out the address and send it, hoping she hasn't been waiting for my reply this whole time.
Ji enters the room with Lumi in his arms. He bounces her lightly. "I forgot to make a bottle of formula for her. Could you hold her while I make it please?"
"You want me hold her?"
"Yeah, there's no one else to." He chuckles lightly and a small smile appears on my face. "Alright but I'm sure she'll cry as soon as I take her." He rolls his eyes. "I'll be quick." I sit against the headboard and hold out my arms, making sure to support her head as I hold her close to me.
She fusses once Ji leaves the room and wiggles her feet, kicking at my arm. "Sorry Lumi. Your d- Ji, will be back soon." I don't know whether I should address him as her dad even though he is. I just don't know if he'd be comfortable with that considering the fact that he doesn't tell anyone.
She's wearing an adorable pink onesie and her tiny little fingers find their way inside her mouth. She's a drooling mess and I tug on her sleeve gently to get her fingers out.
She grabs my index finger and I slightly cringe at her drool that's now on my finger. She's still kicking her legs and her bottom lip wobbles before she lets go of my finger. "He'll be back soon. Just wait a little okay?" She feels so light and tiny in my arms and the more I look at her, the more similarities I see between her and Ji.
They have the same small button nose and the same eyes. She's fair skinned, not as white as he is and she has a head full of black hair. It makes me curious to know who her mom is.
I can't believe she'd leave Lumi all alone with Ji. If she didn't want her, couldn't she have put her up for adoption? Or had an abortion? Maybe her family didn't accept that she was having a baby and forced her to leave Lumi behind. Maybe she still wants to have a relationship with Lumi and is waiting for her to get a little older. Surely she'll be back. Lumi is just too cute to resist.
I can't help but rub my thumb against her soft, smooth cheek. She hasn't cried just yet and I'm glad. I don't think I'd be able to handle a crying baby. I hear Ji's footsteps coming closer and closer before he appears in the room.
"Wow. Look at you two." I feel my face heat up immediately and I stop stroking Lumi's cheek. "I'm surprised she hasn't cried yet." I shrug.
"Would you like to feed her?" He asks, holding a baby bottle filled with milk out to me. "What?" He chuckles. "You look cute when you're so surprised. I asked, if you want to feed her?"
"Me? But I don't know how to."
"It's pretty easy." He nudges the bottle against my hand and Lumi holds her hands up to grab the bottle. I take the lukewarm bottle with one hand and wait for him to instruct me. "Hold her up just a bit then put the teat in her mouth and she'll drink."
Ji gets a pillow and puts it under my arm so I can rest it on there while holding her up just a bit. I guide the teat into her mouth and she starts drinking.
