VELANDREL JAY
Fuck it!
Each floor has two hallways.
My brother dashed his way past us, and I saw him open the door of an office.
"Pumasok kayo rito dali!" he commanded.
My brother didn't come inside with us.
They were chasing someone, and that someone was my brother!
"Don't do it, Jay," Jiana whispered. "It's too dangerous."
I felt anger overflowing in my system. It felt like my head was spewing hot smoke from a chimney. I'm not a dumb person to let him be chased by those shits!
Marahas kong iwinaksi ang kamay niya. "Do you think I'll let those shits harm my brother?
"Your brother saved us.
Saved us? No, he's putting his mortal flesh in danger!
"He's risking his life!"
"Aren't we all risking our lives here?" kalmadong tugon niya pero nanlalaki ang mga mata. "Xendrenos' plan to go here was already a risk, but we agreed to it anyway. We are risking our lives in the first place. And what your brother did was an act of saving us."
"He could have entered this place and be with us, but he ran away instead," may diin kong sambit habang napaturo pa sa sahig. "I need to save him."
"No. He wants you to stay here," naiinis na niyang saad saka napaturo sa baba.
Nakaisang hakbang ako paabante saka dinuro siya. "And who are you to stop me from saving my brother?" pigil kong sigaw habang nanlilisik ang mga mata.
"I'm stopping you to save us all," may diin niyang sambit. "He wants you to be safe. What if mapahamak ko doon tapos bumalik siya rito at wala ka? Come to think of it. We don't know his plan, but trust him. I know he will do his best to save us. He will come back for you and for us."
I firmly held my ground, and she never left her spot. In the end, I just heaved a deep sigh and turned my back on her, walking like a dead man towards the wall.
I leaned against the cold, bloody concrete and let my body slide down until I sat on the floor, doomed with anxiety and fear.
My ears could still catch the noises made by the slithering feet of those infected people while looking for a human snack along the hallway.
The tears started to loom in my eyes.
I couldn't imagine losing my brother in this epidemic. I don't want him to leave me. I'm not ready to face the world without him.
Kahit minsan ay cold ako sa kaniya, I still love him as my big bro. Hindi niya ako pinapabayaan. He is always concerned about me and is always available to me.
Ayokong mawala siya sa akin.
Please, kuya, balikan mo kami...
None of us spoke. Tinakasan yata kami ng mga salita.
"You really care for your brother, huh?" pagbasag niya ng katahimikan.
I sniffled. "Of course, he's my brother. Siya na lang ang natira sa'kin. Kahit noong wala pang epidemic, hindi niya ako pinapabayaan."
"You're lucky," sambit niya.
"I'm lucky to have him. How about you? Do you have siblings?" tanong ko saka napasinghot.
"Yes, I do. May kuya rin ako. But..."
"But?" Doon na ako napatingin sa kaniya.
"He died when he tried to save me from being hit by a truck. I was just 10 years old back then," malungkot niyang saad. Nakayuko siya at malalalim ang bawat paghinga.
"I'm sorry to hear that," bulong ko. "Were you in the USA at that time?"
I actually didn't know how to carry on this conversation. I didn't know what words to use.
"But you know what was sad?"
"What?"
"My parents were blaming me for his death. They were saying that it was my fault." Mapakla siyang tumawa.
"Blamed you? Why? Your brother even saved you."
"I was crying at that time. Then I saw the balloon vendor across the road, so I ran across without knowing that there was a speeding truck along the highway."
Tears began to flood her eyes.
I felt that I just needed to listen to her. There is no need to speak.
"He was my parents' favorite child back then," her voice cracked as she spoke. "He was smart, obedient, talented—you name it—and here I am, their spoiled, stubborn, and not so smart kid. Because of me, he died."
"Since the day of his death, my parents had barely talked to me," she continued. I felt like an outcast in my own house. She was crying silently, trying her best not to make any loud noise.
I stretched out my arm and caressed her back. Now I understand why she's acting like this.
"Look h-how cruel my parents were," she mumbled between sobs.
"Is that the reason why you don't care about others and are always seeking attention?" malumay kong sambit.
Tumango siya saka napasinghap. "You're right. I know you would know because you're a smart boy." Saglit siyang bumaling sa'kin. "My parents never cared for me, so I never cared for anyone but myself. I'm seeking attention from somebody that my parents should have given me."
"Tell me," she mumbled deeply from the depths of her soul. "Am I worthy to be blamed? Am I too stubborn to the point that my parents chose to neglect me?"
Napabuga ako ng hangin. "You know what, Jiana, the problem wasn't you. It's your parents. Instead of teaching you to learn from your mistakes, they made it worse. They blamed you and treated you like an outcast when, in fact, you needed to be educated and guided to the right path with their help."
Tumango siya saka yumuko. "Yeah, tama ka. I spent my entire teenage years with my friends.
"Everything happens for a reason, Jiana. And I hope that your parents will finally accept what happened to your brother many years ago. I'm wishing a better life ahead of you, Jiana, if you survive this mess," wika ko saka ngumiti.
My eyes widened. I swallowed a lump in my throat. I didn't know how to act normally.
"Thank you, Jay. Thank you for lending me your ear. This is the first time that someone has listened to me.
I have nothing to do right now but hug her back. This girl needs someone who can understand her. Hindi rin madali ang pinagdaanan niya, so she deserved to be loved. She may have flaws, but they aren't the reason for not loving her. She's still great in her own way.
"How's your face?
"Medyo." Napasapo naman siya ng kaniyang pisngi. "It's still stinging, but I'm glad it's getting healed," sagot niya saka tipid na ngumiti.
"It's Kuya Hellion," imporma ni Jiana.
"I thought you weren't going back here. I'm so worried about you, kuya."
My brother hugged me back. "I'm always here for you, Jay.
I sensed that something wasn't right.
"Maybe they went up to the fourth floor," komento naman ni Jiana.
"So what are we gonna do now, kuya?" tanong ko naman.
"Let's go to the rooftop." Napaturo ang kaniyang daliri sa itaas. "Baka nandoon sila," tugon niya.
Humakbang si Jiana. "How are we gonna escape if we're going to the rooftop? Jump? Rooftop is a dead end for us," pagkokontra niya habang nakasalubong ang kilay at pabalik-balik ang tingin sa'min ni kuya.
Ano nga ang tawag do'n?"
"It's the external fire exit staircase, kuya," sagot ko.
"'Yan, 'yan nga." Nahihiya siyang ngumiti.
Kuya Hellion cautiously peeked outside through the narrow opening of the door while we were just waiting for his signal behind him. He then completely opened the door and let us out.
It's time to escape.
