***Sokka's P.O.V.***
Everything in the barn was quiet and still. I kept tossing and turning all night. I was just too excited because of how much time I had spent with Y/n. She was really fun to be around and she had more humor than me when she got comfortable around me. It was kind of sad that we had to leave in the morning. I wish we could stay a little longer, but it would be too dangerous for her and everyone if we stayed.
When I was just about to drift off into a dream, a scream echoed around the barn and lingered in the air. I quickly sat up and looked around. Katara was sound asleep and so was Aang who was laying in Appa's fur. They seemed undisturbed. Maybe it was just me hearing things, but that scream was so heart wrenching. Whoever it was, was in extreme pain. Something within me told me to go and check out what happened, but my head told me to stay put.
Against my better judgment, I got up and crept out of the barn and into the night. I gripped my boomerang in my fist as I slowly walked away from the barn. Then I heard sobs. I looked around and I looked towards Haru's and Y/n's house. The main light was on, so someone was awake. I quickly made it to the house and the door was cracked slightly. I pushed it open just enough for me to get a good look inside. That was when I saw Y/n in the middle of the room. She didn't move, but I watched as her body trembled.
I rushed into the house and kneeled at her side, dropping my boomerang. I slid my arm over her back and around her stomach and pulled her up, sitting her up right. When she lifted her head, her eyes were red and puffy as tears streamed down her cheeks. In the corner of her left eye was a small red spot that only seemed to increase in size the more she cried. It looked like she popped a blood vessel in her eye. I felt my heart drop to my stomach and crack all at once.
"Hey, hey! What happened," I asked gently as I pushed her hair out of her face and wiped the tears from her cheeks.
"He's gone," she replied simply as tears threatened to fall over the edge of her eye lids. "They took him," she cried as she let out a held sob. She then fell into my chest almost as if she were too weak to sit up anymore. "The very person he had saved ratted him out for using his bending! But if it weren't for my brother, that old man would have been dead!"
I felt my blood run cold. I knew what she was talking about. Haru and Katara were hanging out yesterday. When Katara came back, she told us about an old man trapped under dirt and rocks after the Mine collapsed. And it took Katara to talk Haru into using his bending. I didn't know whether to feel guilty or to feel sorry. I wrapped my arms around Y/n and just held her for a moment as she continued to cry. I didn't even know what to say to her at this point.
"I am sorry Y/n," I said into her hair.
"All I want to know is why," Y/n mumbled as she adjusted her head on my chest. Then she sat up and just looked me in the eye as she spoke. "Why does this life seem to take people I care about away from me? First it was my father... and now Haru." She just shook her head as she dropped her gaze before she started crying again. I cupped her face with my hands and got her to look at me.
"Hey, hey. You need to relax before you make yourself sick," I said soothingly as I wiped her tears away with my thumbs.
"I don't really care at this point Sokka. It just adds to the pile," she replied as her voice cut in and out.
"Sokka? Y/n? Is everything okay?" Y/n and I looked, slightly startled by the extra voice. It was Aang and Katara. When Y/n looked at Katara, I watched as her eyes turned cold and dark. Y/n tried to stand, but couldn't get balanced enough on her feet. I stood with her and held her up as she just stared at Katara. Katara gave me a questioning look.
"You," Y/n growled at Katara. Katara's expression dropped even more that it already had.
"Y/n," I said hesitantly. Then Y/n attempted to lung at Katara. As I felt her jerk forward, I locked my finger together and tightened my grip on Y/n as she continued to struggle. Aang stepped forward and pulled Katara behind him. I nodded my head at him and he backed up just as Y/n shouted.
"THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT! HE IS GONE BECAUSE OF YOU," Y/n exclaimed as she stopped struggling. Then Y/n began sobbing as she had one arm slung over my left shoulder and a left fist full of my shirt. "He is gone because of you," she cried. I looked at Katara and tears threatened to slid down her face.
"Haru was taken by soldiers for Earthbending," I clarified softly. Katara gasped before putting her hand over her mouth in disbelief. I looked back down at Y/n and she was still crying.
"And what makes it worse is that it was the crusty old man you made Rue save Katara," Y/n said as she lifted her head from my chest. I loosened my grip lightly but continued to hold her, not knowing what she would do if I let her go.
"Y/n I... I don't know what to say," Katara replied as she stepped forward slightly. Y/n chuckled in her throat. Hearing it made my skin crawl.
"Of course you don't. I wouldn't know what to say after screwing up someone's life either," Y/n commented. "Ya know, our lives were just fine until you showed up! My brother was captivated by you and your pathetic sob story that you have a tendency to preach over and over again!" Even though Y/n had a point, that stung like salt to an open wound. "My brother grew a particular liking to you Katara because he felt that you both had a lot in common. Losing a father or a mother is one thing. But try having your family ripped apart and nobody giving a damn! It may be different in the south, but here, it's every man for themselves. We all try to survive even if it means betrayal." I looked at Aang and he just looked surprised. Y/n slipped through my arms and walked up to my sister and looked her in the eyes intensely. I grabbed Y/n before she had gotten too close and Aang got defensive. "I want you gone by dawn. You've done enough."
