After a lot of swimming, Mark held his hand for them to stop. "Wait here, I think the surface is nearby. I should go check it out first." he said. Adelle was so tired of swimming; she didn't argue with Mark this time.
When Mark returned and told them it was clear, the three demigods all swam to the surface. Adelle gulped fresh air greedily as her bubbled popped and she was free to breath fresh air.
"What is that smell?" Sabine said. She was lying on the ground, her body all dripping wet except for her head and backpack. "We're in a sewer." Mark replied simply. "Why are we in a sewer?" Adelle asked and quickly realized that her question was very stupid. So she added before Mark can say anything to her. "I mean, how can a pond lead to a city sewer? And why isn't the water spilling in here?" she asked. "Well first, a pond can lead to a sewer. And second, we came 'up' remember? Watter don't go 'up'" Mark replied like he was talking to a baby. "What a genius." Adelle muttered pouting. "Ahem...?" Sabine said. Mark and Adelle all turned to look at her. "I think the real question is... Are we safe in here?"
