only the wind rushing past could be heard from outside robin's open window as Steve tired desperately to make conversation, not only was he bad at it, he just simply never had to do it. robin always went on a tangent about something or other leaving Steve short spaces in between remarks to mutter some kind of advice she wouldn't normally follow.
but this time was different, Robin sat to the side leaning away from Steve as she watched the trees, deliberately avoiding Steve's eyesight.
"so i went out on another date, her names Christy or- uh maybe molly..." he paused waiting for her to chime in with her usual lecture or argument. She didn't seem to be listening though, from what Steve could see she simply watched as the trees passed her, no emotion displaying itself on her solemn painted face.

"Robin!?"
that seemed to do the trick, because for the first time in that car ride, she acknowledged his presence.
"where you even listening to me??" he continued, "err- yeah you where saying something about your—relationship with, uhhh—Linda!"
"no, no, no, no! im talking about my date, come on robin!"
"its not my fault your practically have a new girlfriend every week!!"
Steve scoffed at the last sentence, "you have to get your mind off her!! Its not healthy!" he said shooting her a quick glance before refocusing on the road. "like you would know what healthy looks like, you cant even remember the name of your date!!"

the frustrating yet comforting bickering continued on throughout their drive, Steve was thankful that robin was almost back to her old self though he could tell she wasn't one hundred percent into it.
at some point the two had come to a standstill in their conversation and they both settled on staring at the scenery.

"hey um..." Robin started after a few minutes had gone with neither of them talking, "is that... Nancy's car??" the road was long and seemed to stretch for miles, despite this in the distance a car that looked an awful lot like Nancy's could be seen and it was ever approaching, "uhh—yeah your right" Steve answered only feeling anxious for the conversation to come. "im always right dingus." robin remarked the words coming out of a place of panic rather than teasing.
he chose not to argue at that and concentrate on the vehicle that seemed to be emerging quickly.

only growing more weary, robin watched as steve slowed the car as they approached, being careful not to stop it completely.
from where she was she could tell that the window on the left was open just a little and was letting out a light stream of smoke.
"shit is that smoke??" her voice becoming frantic, glancing back she could tell by the look on his face that steve had noticed it now too.
was there a fire?? was Nancy in trouble? why is she pulled over on the side of the road?

the wheels screeched to a stop as Steve pulled over, wasting no time Robin was out the door, running over to the car she had rode in oh so many times.

"nance?" her voice was filled with more urgency than she wanted to admit, she had to know Nancy was ok.

she pulled open the car door and brushed away the smoke that was surrounding the entrance, to say the least it smelt, weird.

Nancy had always been the very stereotypical "good girl" and apart from a few parties (that she never stayed long at) she hadn't have much time or will to experiment with drugs and other "high school memories" that certainly a lot of people didn't seem to remember the morning after.

Robin squinted through the smoke trying to make out what was causing all this and, more importantly, where Nancy was.

once the peculiar smelling clouds parted Robin was able to set her eyes on what was ahead. Sprawled out in-front of her was a disheveled looking Nancy passed out on the two front seats of her car.
her hair was a tousled mess, the curly strands falling down the sides of the leather seats creating a spider web of locks.
The expression splayed across her face was not one of pain or anger but rather peacefulness, and, honestly, Robin had missed that look.
Her arm hung loosely off the seat alongside the hair, it flopped down until it was resting on the ground, a faded glowing cigarette clung half-out of her two fingers.

by the look of the joint it was obvious it had been burning for a little while since the tips of Nancy's delicate fingers were almost caught in the cross fire.

taking the burnt end of the joint from the lifeless Nancy's hand and putting it out on the road, Robin called out to Steve, "w—what do we do??" the faint tremble in her voice indicated her worry. " uh,—fuck, we cant just leave her here" he responded.

Robin shook the sleeping girl but only a light grunt came out and she showed no sign of moving, "well we cant take her home, her parents would freak" Robin started eyes slightly wide.

after a long pause steve spoke, "fuck it, we can take her to mine, my parents aren't home".

oh great.
