it is, unmistakably, Nancy across the room, in a effortlessly perfect, white and black dress, hair clipped back precariously and light makeup brushing over her face.
Her, then vickie, now Nancy. Great she thinks, wide eyed, we can all make a party of it together.
shes staring, she realises with a jolt, when Nancy's head moves from the position with her eyes fixed on the floor, and shes not the only one. there are at least four different guys, all the same, smug smiles, running sweat stained hands through their hair, all gazing upon Nancy.
she would probably find it funny. she thinks, If she were still at Robin's side. This type of thing often happened when the two would go out, a couple guys would eye Nancy, shoot their shot, only to be humbled by the polite decline that she would respond with. After they had gone out if earshot the two would laugh. It was funny, so funny, at the time.
but now, across the room, being unable to do anything but watch, it was torture.
im going to need another drink.
still staring, her inner monologue, that was gradually starting to sound more and more like Steve told her. Rigidly, she turned back, betraying the urges to keep looking.
she wont want to see me, she thinks, she wont, not after i never even stuck around to talk to her. Still, her eyes betray her and she finds herself glancing back to the girl, only this time catching a glimpse of her eyes before they flash away again.
her body tightens.she forces her eyes away, knowing Nancy is watching her.
Only sparing a few peeks, she looks at Vickie. then Nancy, who, this time is staring, not hiding the thoughtful eyes. Then Vickie again.
keeping her eyes on Vickie, she snakes her left arm up and around her waist, resting her head on the small of her shoulder. Vickie's eyes widen, then she smiles, also putting an arm around Robin. She can practically feel the burning of Nancy's eyes on her back.
Nancy was always a bit protective, though, she had no need to be—since, (apart from Robin being as loyal as a golden retriever,) barley anyone was actively making a move on her anyway.
On the other hand, Nancy had gained quite a reputation from her past years and at some point was even dubbed, 'hottest chick in school' which Robin went out of her way to make several points of.Even despite Robin not getting much attention, Nancy was still as protective ever, and if there was one person she always despised and it was Vickie.
Maybe Robin was that oblivious, but Nancy was not. She always saw the way the girl's eyes roamed Robin's lips, she noticed how she would bat her eyelashes just a little more when Robin was around, how her cheeks seemed to tint when Robin would mutter her daily "hello".
Each time infuriating Nancy, each time, her hand curled in a fist, each time making sure to stand just a bit closer to Robin that Vickie.Robin didn't particularly notice Vickie, but she did pay attention to the way Nancy would stiffen when she saw her coming, how she would bite down on the inner corner of her mouth when she stopped to say her daily greetings.
She Waited a couple of minutes before looking back again as to not meet the rabid death stare that was most certainly burning holes in her back, when she did look back her eyes darkened.
Nancy found that she too could also play this game.
Batting her eyelashes, a small smile curling around the edges of her mouth, she let one of the many guys that were loitering around her, drape an arm over her shoulders, continuing to laugh at everything he said—joke or not, it didnt matter. All that mattered is making it look like I'm having a good time-, no , the best time.
her heartbeat going considerably faster and her cheeks finding themselves considerably pinker, Robin decided to take it a step further.
The crowd that was talking to Vickie had dispersed leaving just the two of them, arms slung around each other.
Positioning herself so Nancy had a clear view she slid her hands up so they were resting behind Vickie's head, smiling and giggling the whole time.Smiling through grated teeth at the guy talking to her, eyes hooked over his shoulder in perfect view of Robin and Vickie. Body stiffening with every move made from either two, She's doing this on purpose.
She knows it drives me crazy.Fuck it.
Waiting for the right moment. The moment right when Robin looks at her, right when the attention is on her. She watches inventively, smile faltering, and yet as soon as the moment comes she refuses to hesitate. She pulls the poor boy in by his tie, a move Robin used to fixate on quite a bit, and, cutting him off from whatever he was blabbering on with, planted her lips on his.
All Robin could do was stare, wide eyed. And despite wanting nothing more, she found she could not shut them. She swore her heart skipped a beat, silence pounding on her ears though the room was as loud as ever. Her hands where rooted in place, face frozen in a state of shock, stomach twisting, the familiar pool of tears welling in her eyes. Now the room seemed too loud. Blinding her already deafened senses. The light too bright, the music too loud, the suddenly itchy material scratching against her, walk out, she thinks, don't just watch.
The last thing she Remembers is Vickie asking if she was ok, why the pool of tears was forming, but it was all silenced when lips came into contact with her own.
Across the room, lips still on the guy, she could see Nancy go through the same shock, the fear, the anger, and the jealousy, all flood through her face.
The kiss itself was ok,— good even, but not nearly as groundbreaking as she expected. Vickie had nice lips, and wasn't particularly inexperienced in the matter, but, even so, it just didn't feel,—-right.
Pulling away, Robin looked back at Vickie, a huge grin covering her face.
She felt bad. Bad that she didn't,— that she couldn't, reciprocate. She did the thing she often does, escape. Muttering a frantic "I'm sorry" before stumbling through the house, past Nancy, past the guy she was with, escaping into out into the front yard, and onto the side walk, sitting down, knees tucked in to her chest head nestled in her ruffled pants.
"Robin." Less of a hello more of a request, she thinks.
