This is what it was meant to be like. Back at the start, getting ready for one truthful, innocent, proper date.
It meant to pretend, pretend that they hadn't yet explored their intimacy. Pretend that Nancy doesn't have Robins phone number burned into her memory. Pretend that she doesn't know just when to call to make sure Robin is indeed the one to pick up. Pretend not to know how Nancy mutters every so often in her sleep or how Robin lets out a sigh before shes going to say something funny. They were meant for each other in that way, born to find one another, she was sure of it.

Nancy always looked perfect Robin thought, but on this night, she looked particularly gorgeous. It wasn't just her flowing summer dress, or the shoes to match her clutch. It wasn't just the way her eyes were shining so bright, or the sent of perfume entangling her and Robin. It was something else as well, something deeper inside,  something that told her she was right, about all of it, about starting a-new.

They agreed to meet in the clearing outside Robin's house. Nancy was the first, standing in the sunny glow. Robin met her outside. She was wearing muted green shorts, barley covering her freckled thighs, and her best (non stained) pattern t-shirt, covered slightly by a lose tan button up left undone.

It was warm and the breeze contrasted by the sultry summer light was rather refreshing,
"hello, you." Nancy started her mouth twisting into a small grin.

"oh, what was your name again?" Robin teased back.

Nancy giggled, oh, how she could revel in the sound of it.

"Im Nancy Wheeler, nice to meet you" she said and stuck out her hand to shake in mock seriousness.

suddenly starting over didn't seem that difficult. not for her, not for Nancy.

the car ride was smooth, not overly chatty but (not so surprisingly) an opulent environment all the same.

She knew it was supposed to be the start, or the re-start rather, but it didn't feel like it.
The real start was fast, quick, messy, just a dalliance. Too eager for their own good.
As they were now, something was different. The feeling hadn't changed, no. But they way they were expressed had.

It was to learn that faster isn't always better, that being the hare in a race against a tortoise wouldn't guarantee a win. Taking their time didn't have mean missing out.

Sometimes its better just to appreciate what you have in that very moment. You will have your fair share of ups and downs in your, life, work and relationships, take a moment and take it in once in a while.

Robin is staring now, unashamedly, shes admiring every strand of hair falling in place on Nancy's face, every shred of dignity she had left to preserve her embarrassment was gone at this point, she had left it too long.

"don't think i cant see you staring."

Old Robin would have been embarrassed, Old Robin would have blushed and denied it, but new Robin didn't want to waste a second.

"don't think i tried to hide it" she says flashing a grin.

Nancy bites her lip as she pulls in the dirt driveway of their destination. A sight to behold, the field green and lush, sprinkled with colourful flowers like confetti.

It was the same, where they had their first officially date. The breeze was reminiscent of that evening, warm enough from the pink, purple sky and sun on their limbs.
Nancy remembered it all. The way Robin pulled the picnic blanket from the trunk, the way she had smiled endearingly, or the way Robin's eyes seemed to sparkle in the dim light as they were doing now.

"shall we?"

a new beginning.
