It didn't take Paul long to get back. Once he arrived, he sat down next to me. The others wanted to wait for him before answering any more questions.

"How does it feel when you..become a wolf?", I asked him. "The first time is the most painful. It also takes the longest. Your bones are breaking, all the fur breaks through your skin, your jaw lengths and those big ass teeth appear. But with time you kinda get used to it. The faster you shift, the faster the pain is over. Sometimes I don't even realize it anymore.", he explained."I'm glad you took it that well. We were scared you'd find out differently. Like anyone getting angry and shift or something like that. This could be dangerous for you. Emily once was too close. I will never stop regretting this.", Sam said. Emily immediately moved to him and hugged him from behind. He basically melted into her touch. I loved that.

"Are there other wolves here?". "No, right now it's just us - the Uley pack. Do you know about the.. Let's call it.. Balance of power in a normal wolf pack?", Jared asked and clearly had problems to define what he actually meant. "You mean the Alpha, Beta and so on?". "Yes.". I nodded. "Well, Sam is the Alpha of the pack. I'm his Beta and Paul is third-in-command. We were the first three to turn.", he said. "That actually explains quite a lot.", I mumbled.

"There's another 'feature' of being a shifter. We hear and communicate through our thoughts. So we know each other's opinions and thoughts at almost all time.", Jacob said. "Oh shit. Isn't that like super annoying sometimes?". They all nodded and made agreeing sounds while giving each other death glares. Emily and I laughed at this.

"And what is that mate you mentioned earlier?", I asked. For a moment it was deadly silent. "That's something we shouldn't talk about. That's Paul's part.", Quil said unusually serious. "Okay?". I looked over to Paul who's hand went through his hair. It looked more like he wanted to rip it out but changed his mind last second. He sighed. "Let's go for a walk". With that being said he stood up and went outside without waiting. I hurried after him.

We walked for a while. None of us dared saying something. It seemed to be a serious and hard topic for all of them. After some time I couldn't take it anymore. "Okay, what do you want to tell me?", I asked calm.

"It's difficult to explain.", he said and looked away. "That's okay. But at least try to make me understand". He hesitated but finally answered. "Ever noticed how close and protective Emily and Sam are over each other? Emily is Sams imprint. They have a bond to each other. Whatever Emily needs in him, a best friend or a partner, Sam will be that for her. When you find your imprint you become unconditionally bond to them. For the rest of your life.", he explained and avoided to look at me." How does it feel?", I asked. My voice was almost a whisper. He let out a noise that sounded like the combination of a laugher and a grunt. "As soon as I laid my eyes on her the world stopped moving for a second. And then suddenly I was pulled gravitationally to her. There was the urge to be with her, around her, to protect her at all cost. To make her feel happy. To make her laugh.", he said."God, how much I love her laugh."

I smiled lightly. We walked in silence for a few minutes. "You said whatever she needs, you'll be that for her, right?". He nodded. "Let's say she got lost in the woods and wished nothing more than a hug from a certain shapeshifter. Would that influence anything?", I asked. "I don't know for sure but there's a high chance that it did.", he said and finally looked at me.

"So I am your imprint."

It wasn't a question. It was a statement. A statement that let me feel like I wasn't alone for the first time in years.
