Emily met Monotaro when she was snooping around an abandoned school. She saw him inside and assumed he was a hostage. He told her he was and, a few days later, they started to hang out together.
Friendship soon developed into love, or that's how Emily perceived it. Neither Emily's dads or Monotaro's dad know about their love. Her friends and siblings do, though.
Emily's friends say Monotaro's manipulating her, but she doesn't believe them, believing she can change him for the better. Monotaro's siblings beg Monotaro to give Emily to their dad, but he doesn't listen to them, knowing that his dad would give him a serious punishment for not telling him about Emily sooner and that Monokuma's boss would take her from him.
