Taking the next step in your training was exciting, even if Kylo had warned you that it would be painful. You knew it would be, you'd seen him do his 'mind probing' on a few of your patients, well, prisoners. As if you were about to jump into cold water, you felt a slight rush of adrenaline as you entered his meditation room. You wanted to develop your abilities further, but you were nervous for what was about to happen.
"Same as always?" you asked and sat down opposite of him.
"With the difference that I will get inside your mind."
"Don't you do that all the time anyway, Sir?"
"No. Reading your mind is passive, what I will do is active. You have no defence mechanisms as it; you are not force sensitive. The only way to defend yourself is to eliminate your presence."
"Sounds simple enough," you said, laughing nervously. You were still a beginner, unable to eliminate your presence reliably, given you'd only done it two times so far. "Invade my mind then, Sir. I have nothing to hide."
"There is no need to be nervous."
"Who said I was? I definitely am not," the sarcasm in your voice was obvious. You couldn't lie to him; you'd given that up a long time ago but sarcasm was fine.
You took a deep breath and closed your eyes. It didn't take you more than a few seconds to get into your trance state and you didn't need to give Kylo a signal for it anymore either. You could feel him searching for you and like a game of cat and mouse, you shifted your presence to a different spot. There hadn't been a single time where that tactic had worked for long, and it was just the same today.
Instead of the force colliding with you, it was a like a needle stabbing through the skin on your scalp. Painful, but manageable. You exhaled and with it decreased your presence further. It was enough to throw Kylo off for a few more moments, then the needle was back. Before your mind's eye you saw flashes of a dark forest, large trees, moss on the ground, cold even though it was summer. Your feet running over the moss, sinking in, water running into your shoes. Laughter, holding the hand of your older brother.
It stopped, you exhaled again, disappearing from Kylo's grasp but he found you again and the needle was starting to scratch on your skull. You focused on the pain, managing it but again visions appeared in front of your mind's eye. A village this time, mountainous terrain, forest all around, a man kneeling down and welcoming you. You jump up into your father's arms, he lifts you up, swirls you around. You laugh, he does as well and you're happy. He watches out for you. He picks up your older brother too, carries both of you inside. Your mother isn't home, she's off to somewhere else. You're too small to know what she is doing and where she is, but you don't care. Your father cooked for the three of you, it smells good.
No. Focus – you thought and you did. You fought against the needle going through your skull, pushed it back out, not able to disappear further from the force. The pain no longer a tool to help you concentrate but hindering you from doing it. You shifted your presence away from Kylo, hiding in the crevices between the metal plates holding the ship together.
Again, he found you and without a warning the pain got worse. You heard yourself wince, then lost yourself in memories again. The black pelts on the wall of your living room; large and soft. They're perfect for sleeping on. Your tiny hand running over it, burying your fingers in it, then your father again. You are sitting on his lap; he rocks you up and down and tells you of the vornskr. You ask if you can see them one time. Your mother answers, tells you no, but your father whispers a yes. Your mother leaving for the week, taking your brother with her. You cry, feeling left out but your father makes up for it; takes you with him. You walk through the forests, it is dark, but you feel safe. You're holding his hand and he will protect you, you just know.
