Chapter 20

The gentle light of sunrise filtered through the French doors, casting a warm glow upon the room as Katsuki woke to Izuku stirring lightly in his arms. His hold tightened instinctively around Izuku, their bodies intertwined in a tangle of limbs.  Izuku practically cried himself to sleep from exhaustion in Katsuki's strong but gentle embrace. He waited there until he felt the small male slowly fall back into a peaceful slumber.

Katsuki watched him with a lazy eye as he slept, wondering if this was how he would spend the rest of his life waking up. The thought roused his senses slightly as he realized he again was getting too close too fast. Gently Katsuki pried himself off Izuku and scooted to his side of the bed, but as he settled in Izuku stirred again before waking.

Damn it.

Izuku's eyes opened as he slowly looked around. Katsuki felt as if the moment they shared together would help strengthen their bond and make them grow closer than ever, but from the look in Izuku's eyes, he saw nothing but a void. He appeared detached and unresponsive as he tried to sit up. Katsuki helped him, but there was no reaction to his touch.  Katsuki couldn't help but feel his chest clench as he gazed at Izuku's expression. worry and confusion etched his face.

Was Izuku feeling numb from his intense emotional night, or was there something else going on now? He gently brushed his fingers across Izuku's cheek, trying to elicit a reaction or some sign of life from him.

But Izuku remained unresponsive, his eyes distant and unfocused. Katsuki felt a sense of regret and helplessness as he realized that Izuku was struggling with something that he couldn't fix, maybe it had been a bad idea to have told him last night.

He remembers giving him his prescribed pills yesterday, how could he have seemed to be improving and then wake up in this state?

"Oi, Deku what's wrong?" he asked.

As Katsuki spoke, Izuku slowly turned his head to look at him, but his eyes remained glazed. Katsuki could see in his eyes that he was aware, but practically no one was home, and he knew that something was definitely wrong.

The room felt heavy with an unspoken tension as Katsuki leaned closer to Izuku, his voice laced with concern. "Answer me, damn it!" His words came out sharper than intended, frustration seeping into his tone.

Izuku's gaze flickered towards Katsuki for a brief moment, but it quickly shifted away, his eyes unfocused and distant. Katsuki clenched his fists, his impatience surfacing.

"Don't shut me out, Deku," he said, his voice softer this time, but the resolve in his words was unmistakable. "I'm here for you, no matter what. But I can't help if you won't let me in."

Izuku remained silent for a few moments before finally murmuring in a low, monotone voice. "I don't know. I just feel so... drained. Like there's nothing left inside me."

Katsuki's heart sank as he absorbed Izuku's words.

Could this be the state he was in the day after his quirk went crazy?

He knew that depression could cause numbness and detachment, but he had never seen it in someone like this before. Even on his meds he wasn't this bad.

Katsuki silently pulled Izuku into a tight embrace, holding him close, trying to offer him some sort of comfort or warmth that he was lacking.
