Cassia POV

Sitting in the grass of the backyard, I watched Buttons chase her ball and bring it back to me so I could throw it again for her. She was having so much fun, barking excitedly as she skipped up and down. I had to smile. My little one was so cute. And I had to admit that it brightened my mood a little.

This day was not easy. I had been dreading it for months. My due date. The only thing that cheered me up was Buttons and that Roman would be home soon. Just as I was thinking about how much I missed and needed him today, my phone rang. It was Hannah.

"Hi sweetie." I said as I answered it.

"Hi sweetheart. How are you doing? How are you holding up?" she asked in a concerned voice.

She also knew how hard this day was for me. Mom had already called me twice today. And although I was grateful to them, I couldn't deny that it wasn't exactly helpful. I sighed deeply. Buttons noticed and nudged me with her little nose. I stroked her head.

"I'm doing okay. Sad of course, but I'm trying to stay positive. I just think that my baby wouldn't want me to be sad and suffering forever." I replied, but still had to hold back the tears.

"Oh honey... It's okay... don't forget that you have a little angel watching over you. Besides, I'm sure that someday you and Roman will hold a healthy baby in your arms. After all, you are already working hard on it. Even though I still think it's going a little fast with you guys. But even a blind man can see how crazy you are about each other," she said.

"You're right. We've only been a couple for 7 months, but we've been through so much. And I think that has bonded us together like nothing else could. Love creates incredible things. So why wait? He's... he's the one, Hannah," I replied.

"I know. And that's why I haven't made more of a fuss about it. I know you, and he's very good for you. And you're incredibly good for him, too." she said.

"That's true. But enough about me. Come on, distract me.... What's new?" I asked.

"Oh um... there is something new alright. But I wanted to tell you in person. That's why we need to meet as soon as possible, Cass." she replied.

"What's so important that you can't tell me over the phone?" I asked.

"Please, Cassia... I want to see your face when you hear it.... Besides.... besides, today is not the day for it." she said.

"What's the matter? Are you pregnant or something?" I asked as a joke.

Then there was a long pause when she said nothing.

"Oh my god! You're pregnant! Hannah! That's amazing! Congratulations!" I almost yelled into the phone when I realized what her silence meant.

"Thank you, Cass. And I know it's really bad timing to tell you," Hannah replied and I could tell she was crying.

"Are you kidding me? This is the best news I could get today. And I'm so happy for you and Larry! I'm going to be an auntie!" I cheered.

I was really happy for them both. She was my best friend and she's going to be a momma soon! For me it was wonderful to see that my friends were starting a family. But of course I understood very well why she hesitated to tell me.

Roman POV

"Cassia? Where are you, baby girl?" I called out as I entered the house.

But neither my girl nor Buttons were anywhere to be seen or heard. Normally, that wasn't something I would worry about. But today was different. My heart was heavy and I knew Cassia was feeling the same way.

As I walked through the house I saw that the door to the backyard was open. I went outside and saw Cassia sitting in the grass playing with Buttons. She was obviously trying to distract herself from her thoughts.

"Hey, baby girl." I said as I gave her a kiss on the head and sat down next to her.

"Roman! You're home already? I didn't hear you." she replied, sounding surprisingly cheerful.

"I called you, but I guess it wasn't loud enough. How are you feeling?" I wanted to know.

"So much better since I got off the phone with Hannah. Guess what? She's having a baby!" she replied.

"That's great. I'm happy for them." I said as I put my arm around her shoulders.

"It is. She's going to be a great momma. She made my day. And how are you doing?" replied Cassia.

"I'm doing fine so far. It makes me happy to see you in such a good mood. I brought something to eat. Chicken Parmesan. I thought we'd spend the evening in front of the TV and relax," I said before giving her a kiss on the temple.

"Sounds really good. I could use an evening alone with my boyfriend." Cassia replied as she leaned against me.

Buttons protested with an annoyed bark and jumped into my lap.

"Butt-Butt obviously objects." I laughed.

"Don't worry, Buttons. Mommy and Daddy won't leave you alone." she assured her.

"Will you help me up?" she said a short time later.

I took her by the hands and pulled her to her feet, but it didn't escape me that she was swaying slightly.

"Are you all right?" I wanted to know.

"Yeah... just a little dizzy. That's the second time today," she replied.

"Oh... are you thinking what I'm thinking?" I asked.

"That it's time for a test again? Yes, that's what I'm thinking. But please don't have too much hope. The last 2 were negative." said Cassia.

"I know... but I prefer to think positive." I said and winked at her.

A few minutes later, I was now sitting on the bed in the bedroom, waiting. But I couldn't stand it for long. Then I started pacing up and down nervously. Buttons was sitting on Cassia's pillow and her gaze was following me the whole time.

"Everything okay in there?" I asked through the door.

"Yeah sure... it would be better if you stopped talking to me." I heard her say.

I stepped back from the door and kept walking until she finally came out.

"Here, you take it. I'm too nervous. Two more minutes." she said as she pushed the test into my hand.

"Calm down, baby girl." I said as I hugged her.

Cassia wrapped her arms around my middle and rested her head against my chest. When the phone beeped, she jumped in my arms.

"Ready?" I asked.

She just nodded. My heart was pounding in my throat as well. But somehow I had a good feeling.

Slowly, I turned the test over in my hand and stared at it.

"Well? What is it?" she wanted to know.

"We're having a baby!" I exclaimed, immediately pulling Cassia into my arms.

"Oh my god!" she whispered.

"I love you so much, baby girl. Thank you, thank you, thank you." I replied as I covered her face, her beautiful face with kisses.

"I love you too! And thank you!" she said before she started kissing me passionately.

When we woke up this morning it was a day we had dreaded. But now it was a day we would remember for something completely different as well.
