Chapter 32

May 14, Friday

No one's POV

Yet again, Nate has found himself in the corridor of Michigan College, going on the path he has gone tons of times before to the direction of Maeva's dorm room.

His back was hunched, his eyes droopy. He was tired of this-- trying so hard to win back this thing he lost over something so... stupid; something that wasn't even his fault.

Nate swore to himself that this was his last attempt in trying to get his first love back, because if he doesn't move on, Maeva will never move on-- and it's the best for the both of them if he just simply... gave up.

Hesitantly, the blonde boy raised his fist to knock on the door. Slowly, Maeva creaked it open, though quickly re-shut the door after noticing that it was Nate standing outside of that place.

"Please Nate-- please... just leave." Maeva practically sobbed, tears glossing over her chocolate brown eyes. She leaned her head back on the door, her curly brunette hair messily scattered around her shoulders.

"I told you-- I'm not giving up on you." Nate uttered, his voice quiet and wispy. He could feel tears well up in his eyes too. This hopelessness, and realisation, was too much for him; too much for him to handle.

"Well you should." Maeva hastily replied in a makeshift shout, "I-- I can't trust you after that. I can't risk it-- I really can't. How do I know if you're gonna kiss some other girl?"

Again, Nate was misunderstood-- blamed for something he would never even dream of doing. He sighed, leaning his forehead on the smooth wooden door. "I didn't kiss that girl." He then whispered, more to himself than to Maeva; he's tired of being blamed, but Maeva's tired of hearing his lies, even if they aren't even false.

"Please, please, please, Maeva. I love you, I love you so much. I can't... I can't live without you." Nate stated, a crack in his shaky voice. But Maeva only responded to him with silence, both of them trying not to completely break down right then and there.

"Fine, I'll leave you alone, but I just ask for one thing--" Nate declared, fluttering his blue eyes shut as lonely tears quietly rolled down his cheeks at this final resort. He really couldn't believe it, all that they had, officially being thrown away.

"What?" The brunette girl requested, sniffling.

"I want you to look me in my eye and... and tell me that you don't love me anymore." Nate announced, taking his head off of the door, looking straight at it as if he would be able to see his once beloved if he looked hard enough.

"I-- what?" Maeva croaked, standing up straight, eyes widened in surprise.

"I want you to open the door and tell me that you no longer love me; that you have moved on." Nate started saying again. "If you do that, I'll never come back. I won't call, I wont text, I wont knock on your door ever again. But just tell me you don't love me anymore."

Maeva really didn't want to do it, because if she did, it would mean that she and him were over... officially. No more Nate and Maeva, her first love lost-- forever.  She might say that the constant chase annoyed her, but she had a bit of her that enjoyed his lingering. She wanted him to stay, but wanted him to leave as well. Though, it was for the best, so the both of them can continue to live their lives, and stop being each others' burdens.

So she slowly reopened the door, and did as he said. She looked straight in his sea blue eyes, the ones she fell in love with, and uttered the five words she never thought she would say to her Nate Stone.

"I don't love you anymore."

Tears were streaming down her tanned cheeks, as well as Nate's. At last, the blonde boy nodded, before turning away and disappearing into the dark hall as Maeva shut her door again.

Though, as Nate walked away, instead of letting his broken heart take over his mind and start balling his eyes out, he just simply wiped his tears away and stood up straight again, walking home as if none of that had ever happened; masking away his pain with a stone-cold face.

Though a whole different thing was happening for Maeva. She slid down her wooden door, glad that Lauren wasn't there to see her in such a state. She wailed and screamed, hoping that the people who lived beside her didn't hear her; thank God it was Friday, everyone out elsewhere.

The Renolds girl has been wanting this for a while, able to be free from this dilemma. But then again, she couldn't help but feel... hurt.

Maeva sobbed so much she almost couldn't breathe. It felt like she was drowning, with no one to save her.

Which is what scared her so much at that moment. Who was going to save Maeva?

Though as if on queue... Josh arrived at her room.
