Chapter 2

July 13, Monday

Kathrin's POV

After a seven month streak of being free from child abuse, it was right back.

Right after school ended, we got our report cards back. I got straight A's for most of my classes, but c'mon, who does not flunk history. Well, I didn't necessarily fail, just could've gotten better grades.

I tried to hide my report card from him, but goddammit, nothing gets past him.

Either way, got a really good beating from that piece of shit.

Currently, I was trying to stop the blood from my nose. How the fuck is there so much up there? I genuinely do not get it.

And then-- thump! I quickly grabbed onto my pocket knife, cautiously going out of my bathroom to find...

"Oh, Eleanor. It's just you." I sighed out, quickly hiding away the pocket knife as she climbed in my window. "Hey-- what happened?" Eleanor's bright smile faltered, her sky blue eyes filled with worry. "Is it your dad? He's hitting you again?" She worriedly asked, going to cup my cheeks.

"Yea, but it's not that bad. Don't think he got the chance to throw a tantrum in a while, he's lacking in his fighting skills." I responded, turning away from her and going back to the bathroom.

I grabbed onto a cotton pad, but Eleanor took it away from me.

"Here, I'll help you with that." She stated, pushing me onto the toilet seat. Well that hurt.

The blonde girl started cleaning up my scars, while I stared up at her in awe. Who would've thought, someone as amazing as her actually wanted to be with someone like me.

I mean, she's just great in general. She's so smart, and so kind. She doesn't realise how completely mesmerised I am by her. It's almost like I'm in love.

"Y'know I can do that by myself, right?" I asked, feeling a smile inch up on my face. That's what I want to do around her all of the time. It's how she makes me feel: happy.

"Yeah, I know. But I'm your girlfriend, I'm supposed to take care of you." She responded, her eyes landing on mine for a second, then going straight back to cleaning up my scars. "Okay." I muttered, feeling my grin grow even wider.

"Either way," The blonde started saying again, throwing away the bloody cotton pads as she cupped my cheeks with her warm hands. "I heard that it's your birthday tomorrow." She finished saying.

"I assume Sienna told you?" I quizzed, staring up at the girl who sat on my lap.

"Yes, so I got you a gift." She stated, me smirking ever so slightly. "You didn't have to--" I started saying, but the blue eyed girl cut me off. "No, but I wanted to."

She reached in her tiny purse (purses were created for people to put actual fucking things inside, but somehow people still prefer to buy the ones that are not functional) and pulled out a small black box with a purple bow on top.

The blonde girl handed it to me while I slowly opened it to reveal a necklace with half of a heart pizza.

"It's how you asked me to prom. With a heart pizza. I just thought that it would be a nice little thing that represents a memory." Eleanor explained, grabbing her necklace out of her shirt. "See? They complete each other; like you do with me."

I didn't know what to say. This deserved so much more than just a 'thank you'. I mean, sure, from the outside it seems like just a simple, immature necklace. But behind it was a memory that I will forever cherish and smile whenever I think about.

So I cupped her rosy cheeks, pulling her down so her lips meet mine. "I-- I-- thank you." I stammered, caressing the small necklace. "I love it." I then muttered, feeling my lips curve up into a small smile once more.

"And that's not all." I heard Eleanor say from above me, leading to me looking up so her blue eyes met mine. "Hmm, really?" I quizzed, glancing at her slyly. "Really." She then responded, smirking.

"C'mon. Let's go to your bedroom and I'll show you."

Eleanor's POV

My eyes fluttered open as I felt myself stir awake. I rubbed my eyes groggily as I sat up in Kathrin's bed; leaning onto my elbows. Looking to my right, I could see a blurry silhouette that belonged to the love of my life, a tired haze still clouding my head.

The partly pink haired girl sat criss-crossed on her black chair, reading a book. "Hey." I said, my voice quite raspy from just waking up. "Morning." Kathrin responded, looking up from her book for a second, but then going straight back to it.

"What are you reading?" I then asked, sitting up straighter as I tucked my messy blonde locks behind my ears. "Song of Achilles." She simply responded, not taking her eyes off of the book.

"Hmm, what is it about?" I quizzed, smiling slightly. Just looking at her made me happy. How her dark eyes flicker to each new word. How she tries to choke back a laugh at every funny moment. And how she tries to bite back a frown whenever something sad happens.

Every little thing she does-- the ones she doesn't think I notice, the ones that I don't even think she knows about-- it makes me feel joyous. I am completely and utterly in love with her and everything she does. And it kills me inside not being able to tell her. At least not yet.

"What is it about?" I then questioned, going to walk over to her. She flicked a page, starting a new one.

"About two Greek warriors who fell deeply in love. But there was always something trying to stop them from being together. But what can I say? The heart wants what the heart wants."

I don't think she realises how happy it made me when she talked to me about things that make her happy.

"Sounds a lot like us." I murmured, going to straddle her lap as I wrapped my arms around her neck. Kathrin finally shut the book, putting it aside. "It does, doesn't it?"

I slowly leaned down, our lips meeting each others. "Happy birthday." I muttered into the kiss, and I could feel her smile up against me.

We kept making out, but it was interrupted when I heard my phone ring from her little black bedside table. "Sorry." I mumbled, getting up from where I sat and going to get my phone.

It lit up with the name 'detective mom💘🕵️'. Shit.

I quickly picked it up, glancing over to see that Kathrin has started reading her book again. "Hey mom." I answered, trying to hide the shake in my voice. "Where are you?" She asked in a stern voice, almost as if she was mad.

"I told you yesterday-- I'm at Kimmys'." I lied, fidgeting with my shirt. "Then why do I see you at Kathrin's window right now?" I heard her ask through the phone.

My eyes widened as I quickly turned around to see my mother standing out at the road right outside of Kathrin's house.
