One Thing I Knew For Sure

As soon as I heard the Doctor say Ovarian Cancer, I immediately sucked in a breath. How was this happening to me? Nobody in my family had a history with Ovarian Cancer, so was it possible that I could be at risk? I sat there, unable to speak.

"How likely is it that the cysts can be cancerous?" I heard Nick ask as I sat there with my head hanging down.

The doctor cleared his throat, "I can't say for sure, but I would say that it is most likely not cancerous. We want to biopsy them just to make sure. It's more of a safety precaution.

Once the Doctor said it was more for safety, I felt a little bit at ease. I lifted my head up and made eye contact with the Doctor. "How soon can we do the surgery?" I asked, "I want to get this done as quickly as possible," I explained to him. He just nodded his head.

"I want to get it done fairly soon. We can do a pre op appointment on Monday, and schedule the surgery on Wednesday, if that works for you," The doctor said as he rummaged through the file in his hand.

"She will do it then," Nick eagerly spoke. I quickly turned around and looked at him.

"Nick, I should probably check with Mrs. Kenzington first," I said. Nick just watched and shook his head.

"You will do it then. The sooner, the better. Besides, it's my company. I oversee everything that goes on in the building. You have my consent," he said as he watched me, and then turned his attention to the Doctor.

"Okay, so we will see you on Monday for your pre op appointment. Let's do 9:00 a.m," the Doctor said as he made a note.

"Sounds good," I said. I looked back at Nick for his reassurance. He just nodded his head.

"Thank you, Doc," Nick said as he took a step forward and shook his hand. Once the doctor was done, he exited the room, and told us that we were free to go. Nick helped me up, off the table, and had me lead the way out of the hospital. We both walked quietly to his car. Once we were inside, we both sat there for a minute, still not saying a word..

"Are you okay?" Nick quietly asked. I could feel him staring over at me, but I didn't bother to look at him. I continued to look out the side of my window and just nodded my head.

"I'm fine," I finally said quietly. "Can you just please take me to my car?" I asked him, still not changing my gaze.

"I'm going to take you home. My driver can pick you up tomorrow for work," Nick said as he put the car in drive and then started to head towards my apartment. I let out a sigh. I didn't want to argue with Nick over something so petty. I just wanted to be home. I wanted to curl up in a ball and just be alone.

We pulled up to the parking structure, and parked the car. Nick got out with me, and came with me inside. I set my stuff down and went straight to the couch to sit down. Nick followed me and sat on the coffee table that was in front of me. He looked down at me and just watched. I looked up at him.

"Thank you for today," I said as I looked back down and fiddled my thumbs in my lap.

Nick leaned forward. His two fingers met my chin, and he gently lifted my head up, "Demi, you have nothing to thank me for. You needed to get checked out, and I wanted to stay," he said.

I just nodded my head. I didn't know what to say. I was still trying to make sense of all of this, still trying to process it all. "What if it's cancerous, Nick? What am I going to do?" I asked him as my eyes started to water.

Nick, still leaning forward, reached out and wiped away my tears, "If it is cancerous, then together, we will fight like hell. I will fight this with you, Demi. If we have to cross that bridge, we'll cross it together, and get all the help in the world. However, we really shouldn't stress about that yet. The doctor said it's more of a safety precaution, that they are taking with the biopsy," he explained to me as he had a reassuring smile on his face. I nodded my head and sat back a little. "You going to be okay?" He asked again, as he slowly got up.
