Rose cracked open her eyes

Rose cracked open her eyes. Her blinds were pulled down shutting out the light that was begging to be let in. She let out a long breath stretching out her limbs.

She suddenly remembered the night before.

Steve.

The break up.

Rose raised her head looking over the edge of her bed. Steve was still asleep, laying on his stomach, his face facing away from her. Her eyes glanced over to the radio clock on her nightstand. It was just passed 10. Jean would be getting home anytime now. From her "date".

Rose pushed the covers off her body, moving slowly to scoot off the bed. Steve moved his head then went back to sleep. She quietly slid off her bed, stepping over him going to the door.

She bit her lip, twisting the handle as slowly as she could. Pulling the door open, it creaked once. She was able to slip through shutting it softly behind her.

Her feet padded back into the living room and kitchen. She yawned walking into the kitchen reaching to grab the pancake mix.

Rose was in the middle of making coffee when the front door opened. She glanced up closing the flap to the filter, letting the machine start. Jean looked up at the girl setting her keys into the bowl beside the door. Rose put a finger to her lips, the women's brows furrowing.

"Did you sneak a boy over?" The women whispered laying her coat over a chair, a smile playing on her lips.

"Its Steve. Him and Nancy broke up last night." Jean made a small saddened face before that quickly changed.

"And you decided you sweep him up the moment he was free?" Roses mouth fell open as she mixed the batter together.

"Oh shut up. He's a friend. He was heartbroken, I offered to let him not spend a night alone. We just watched movies and ate a lot of junk." She looked back down, getting the last bit of flour from the side of the bowl. Then a realization hit her. "Shit." She cursed running over to the phone.

It just rang. And rang.

"C'mon, pick up." She whispered. She felt Jean eyeing her from her place in the kitchen. Rose had completely forgotten she promised to hang out with El. The girl was probably furious.

The voice-mail box came on.

"I'm sorry, I forgot." She let it record then she hung up. She sighed hanging the phone back up.

"Who was that?" Rose couldn't even tell Jean. No one could know about El.

"It was for Dustin, he had wanted me to go over to his house and split candy. I forgot to let him know last night that I couldn't." She lied easily off her tongue. Thats when her bedroom door opened. Steve was still rubbing his eyes when he walked out.
