Not now.
Jeongyeon can't believe this is happening now. She needs to be on set in a few minutes for a group shoot, but instead she's on her knees trying to catch her breath.
No matter how hard she tries, she can't get enough air to fill her lungs. She gasps again. Her vision blurs and the white tiles under her body blend together, dissolving into each other then rippling apart like a kaleidoscope.
Just breathe. Breathe.
She recites those words over and over, willing her body to cooperate but it's not working. Jeongyeon feels like she can't breathe.
A high pitched whine rings in her ears. She vaguely knows there's people surrounding her, but she can't hear any of them. The only thing she can hear is that high pitched noise as it grows louder and reverberates inside her head.
Just breathe.
Why can't she breathe? A deep seated fear takes over as she begins to panic. Is this how it ends? Is she dying right now? She doesn't want to die; she desperately wants to live.
Please. Not yet. I don't want to go yet.
"Jeongyeon!"
There.
A voice.
Jeongyeon can faintly hear someone calling her name.
"Jeongyeon look at me."
She knows that voice. Why does it seem so far away?
Jeongyeon fights against the panic in her chest, grabbing at anything to anchor her. Her hands brush against fabric and she clings to that lifeline.
"It's alright Jeongyeon. You're alright."
That voice is getting louder now. The high pitched whine begins to soften before it comes to an abrupt end, leaving just as suddenly as it appeared.
Jeongyeon can hear a myriad of voices surrounding her as the the room comes back into focus. They're mostly a jumble and she can only pick out fragments of what's being said.
"Unnie help her!"
"Yes. Please hurry!"
"I have water!"
"...worried about her..."
"She's on her way."
"Call him again!"
"Jeongyeon?"
Warm hands gently cup her face and she sinks into that warmth. It feels like ages since she's felt warm. She closes her eyes, not even noticing the tears that fall.
Jeongyeon is so tired.
There's a heaviness in her chest that she can't explain. When did it get there?
Why can't she seem to get rid of it?
Those same warm hands are pulling away from her and she wants to chase after them, but then they wrap around her and pull her close. She sinks into a new warmth that slowly covers her body.
The voices around her are soft whispers now. Whoever is here dares not disturb the stillness. Jeongyeon finally gathers the strength to open her eyes.
Jihyo's tear stained face is the first thing she sees. Her best friend looks lost, and Jeongyeon feels sorry for having worried her so much. She gives her leader a weak smile that makes Jihyo cry.
The woman is crouched on the floor only a foot away. She scoots over and joins the hug that Jeongyeon is still embraced in.
Not far away, the rest of her girls are huddled around her. Dahyun and Tzuyu haven't stopped crying yet. Momo and Sana are doing their best to comfort them while keeping their eyes on her too. They anxiously look at Jeongyeon, torn between helping their younger members and wanting to go to her.
Chaeyoung is clinging to Mina. She's trying to keep herself from crying more than she already has. All the while Mina stares back at Jeongyeon, and she knows that Mina knows what's wrong. She knows better than anyone here what just happened. Mina looks so heartbroken at that knowledge.
Jeongyeon closes her eyes again.
She clings to the person holding her tight, breathing in the familiar perfume that she's smelled dozens upon dozens of times.
"It's alright Jeongyeon," Nayeon whispers again. "I'm here."
Jeongyeon lets herself get lost in her embrace. In a few moments, she'll have to let go and face what's going to come. There will be lots of questions and talks with her managers. Her company will want her to get evaluated and she'll finally have to tell someone what's been going on.
But for now, Nayeon is all she'll think about.
Jeongyeon will think about how her hands feel pressed steadily against her back, keeping her safe. She'll focus on the way Nayeon's fingers brush back and forth across her shirt and how her breathing is slow and steady and calming. And how the space between her neck and shoulder is the perfect place for Jeongyeon to hide.
It's enough to keep Jeongyeon from drifting away into that dark harbor her mind keeps pulling her towards.
"Do you want to get up now?" Nayeon softly asks her.
Jeongyeon just pulls her tighter and shakes her head no.
"Just a little while longer."
It's the first thing she's said in a while now. Her voice sounds so small, so unlike the playful prankster she used to be. Where did that girl go?
Jeongyeon wishes she could find her again.
"Alright. We can stay here as long as you want Jeongyeon," Nayeon says. Then in a quiet voice that only Jeongyeon can hear, she adds, "I'm not going anywhere, I promise."
Jeongyeon feels the heaviness in her chest lighten a bit. It's not much, but it's enough to help her breathe a little easier.
One day, that heaviness will go away. She won't be the same girl she was before, but she'll be able to joke and laugh again. She'll learn how to filter out the negative comments and focus on the people who love her without any expectations. Her girls will stand by her side and make sure that she's never alone.
Twice will always be her anchor.
A/N: Sometimes I get super emotional when I think about everything that Jeongyeon went through. I'm so glad that she's in a much better place mentally. Being able to watch her slowly come back and be herself again is what made me love her and Twice even more. I promise fluffier chapters are ahead.
p.s. Happy solo debut day Jihyo! Go stream Killin Me Good my dear readers 🧡🔫
