A/n: I'm so sorry for leaving this hanging! My inspiration basically died halfway through so I put it away for months. Sorry again 🫶🏻
"Then Jihyo said 'what do I look like, your mother?' You should have seen his face Nabongs!" Jeongyeon exclaimed with a wheezing laugh. "I swear the guy was gonna give himself a coronary, he was so red!"
In the passenger seat of Jeongyeon's older model Hyundai Sonata, Nayeon laughed along with her. "I wish I'd been there to see that. I love when Jihyo puts stupid guys in their place. She's a queen," Nayeon said with a proud smile. She reached over to fiddle with the a/c, cranking up the heat some more. The weather was only getting colder now that autumn was winding down, and it wouldn't be long before winter would come in full force, bringing icy winds and heavy snow. Nayeon couldn't wait to get home and start cooking the chicken noodle soup recipe she'd gotten from Jihyo's mom. "Jeongie, we got the celery right?" she asked.
"Yep. I put it in the same bag with the carrots and onions." Jeongyeon pulled the car into the parking lot, angling it into their usual parking space, and shut off the engine. "You should've asked before we left the market. What if I had forgotten to grab it?"
"Then I would've sent you back to the store. Duh," Nayeon replied. She got out of the car and headed towards the trunk. Jeongyeon met her there, and they began to unload their bags of groceries. That's when Nayeon saw them. She hadn't noticed when they'd turned into the lot of their apartment complex, but it was hard to miss now. "Jeongyeon," she said urgently.
The blonde looked at her "roommate" then past her, and Jeongyeon felt her heart drop. "Oh no," she whispered, feeling that same anxiousness Nayeon was radiating. A cop car was parked a few spaces away while the police officer, a middle aged man with dark hair and a crisp uniform, stood talking to three familiar teenage girls.
"We have to do something," Nayeon urged her.
"Nayeon, it's not our business. We can't just go and throw ourselves into a situation we know nothing about," Jeongyeon countered. It was no secret the young teens had less than ideal home situations. They'd seen the dirty clothes they always wore and how they tried to make themselves as small as possible when someone came near them. That one girl, the short one, was practically skin and bones, and Jeongyeon just knew she hadn't had a real meal in a long time. Beside her, Nayeon clenched the plastic bag full of vegetables, eyes bouncing between the policeman and the teenagers. Something about the way she held herself let Jeongyeon know she was about to get involved anyhow.
"Just follow my lead," Nayeon said before squaring her shoulders and walking towards the officer.
"Nayeon!" Jeongyeon hissed after the woman, but it did little to stop her; the brunette marched ahead. "Here we go," she muttered to herself. She hurried to catch up to Nayeon before the older woman did something reckless.
"Excuse me officer, is there a problem?" Nayeon asked as soon as she was close enough to grab his attention. The man stopped and turned to her with a serious expression.
"I'm following up on a complaint about some minors loitering in the area. Do you know these girls?" the officer asked. Three anxious girls bowed their heads the second Nayeon looked at them, and she instantly knew that she would do anything to protect them.
"Yes, that's my sister and her friends. They were simply out here taking a break from their homework. Someone seriously called the police for that?" Nayeon scoffed. One of the girls, the one with pale skin, looked up at Nayeon with wide eyes like she was some kind of goddess. "It was probably that busybody neighbor of ours again. She thinks anyone under the age of forty is up to no good."
Nayeon was lying so smoothly even Jeongyeon was caught up in it. "Probably," she agreed, adding onto Nayeon's story. "She called the cops one time because a guy was walking on the sidewalk too early apparently." The cop considered their words before sighing heavily, like he had ample experience with those kinds of people. "We're sorry you had to come out all this way for nothing sir. You have much more important things to deal with than some bored teenagers," Jeongyeon told the man.
