The Cold of Winter Brought Me Your Warmth

Cold.

It was impossibly cold, Jeongyeon thought, as the harsh winter wind battered her, slicing through the threadbare jacket that did little to provide her with warmth. It was the only jacket she'd been able to afford with her sorry excuse of a paycheck though. She'd had just enough money left to buy herself a twelve count value pack of instant noodles that now sat at the bottom of her backpack. Hopefully she'd be able to stretch them out over the next week until payday came again.

Another harsh gust of wind nearly knocked her off her feet. The skies didn't look too good; snow was on its way and she dreaded being caught out in it. With careful steps, she trudged forward, determined to get to the bus stop that was still a few blocks away. It would at least give her shelter for a few hours, maybe even for the night if there weren't any people around. Jeongyeon had learned over the last two years which spots were good for staying at without anyone paying too much attention.

There was that bookstore that she stayed at a lot during the warm months. The workers didn't care if she hung out all day just to beat the sweltering heat of summer so long as she didn't bother anyone. There was also the little rundown twenty four hour diner that she liked. She was able to get free water and sometimes one of the waitresses would take pity on her and let her have the food that went untouched. But she didn't go as often now since they'd hired that new manager. He was a total ass and always gave her the creeps with the way he stared at her.

This bus stop she was heading to now was probably her favorite though. It was one of those new enclosed bus stops that had a/c in the summer and heat in the winter, so basically a godsend for someone like her. With a bit of luck, she might be able to pass the cold night there without any trouble.

By the time Jeongyeon made it the few blocks to the bus stop, she couldn't feel most of her body. She might as well have been a giant walking icicle. Going inside the heated stop wasn't going to be pleasant. Her skin would sting and itch and just be generally uncomfortable while she tried to adjust to the drastic change in temperature, but at least she'd finally be out of this freezing weather and someplace warm.

Jeongyeon stumbled into the heated shelter the moment the automatic doors slid open and collapsed onto the nearest seat. She was shaking like a leaf, with lips trembling and her whole body aching from the cold. The chill felt like it had seeped into her bones and made a home there.

"Excuse me, are you alright?"

A feminine voice had her jumping in her seat. She didn't realize anyone else was in here. Cautiously, she looked up and saw a girl around her age just a few spaces over. The girl was wearing one of those thick down coats that Jeongyeon would kill to have and she was looking at her with worry.

"I-I-I-I'm f-f-fine," Jeongyeon said through chattering teeth. Yeah, she sounded totally convincing.

"Here." The girl scooted over and pulled a heat pack from the pocket of her coat and offered it to Jeongyeon. "You need this way more than me."

On a normal day, Jeongyeon would have brushed off the help, still having a bit of stubborn pride, but today wasn't a normal day. It was too cold and she really, really wanted that heat pack so she took it without a second thought and almost cried in relief when the heat burned against her numb fingers.

"You can have it. I have more at home," the girl said with a bright smile. "My name is Im Nayeon. What's yours?"

"J-j-jeongyeon," she managed to say.
