tw: very brief mentions of domestic/child abuse
"Hi."
Jeongyeon stills at the familiar voice and a thousand thoughts assail her at once. She doesn't deign to acknowledge the woman that just spoke and presses forward out the door.
A soft hand grips her wrist, preventing her escape.
"Don't do this Nayeon," she pleads.
Her battered heart can't take whatever Nayeon plans to say. It still hurts so much, like a festering sore that's been neglected for too long.
That voice that she once loved so much, that she still loves, whispers, "I miss you."
Like a moth to a flame, Jeongyeon is drawn into her with those words. She turns and looks at her, really looks at her for the first time in two years.
Nayeon is older now; that innocence is gone and in its place is hard learned wisdom. Her face is fuller, not to say that she's fat, but her youthful appearance has been transformed into a mature woman. Jeongyeon thinks she's even more beautiful now.
But there's a darkness in her eyes that she doesn't recognize.
What happened to you?
Jeongyeon wants to ask but doesn't.
"I miss you so much Jeong."
Nayeon's voice cracks, along with Jeongyeon's heart. A woman impatiently taps her foot behind them, giving them a withering glare for having the audacity to block the exit of the market they're standing in.
Jeongyeon slips her hand into Nayeon's before she can think better of it and pulls her to the parking lot and to her car. She unlocks it then ushers Nayeon into the passenger seat and Nayeon lets her.
Jeongyeon knows this is the worst idea she's had in a long time, but it doesn't stop her from driving away from the market and heading to the nearest park. She picks a spot far away from anyone and kills the engine.
Neither of them speak and ten minutes of agonizing silence crawl by. There are so many things Jeongyeon wants to say, but she can't get the words past her lips.
"I have a son," Nayeon utters quietly, her voice barely above a whisper, but it might as well be a shout with how clearly Jeongyeon hears it. She wants to scream. "He's one now. He's so small. Everyone says he looks just like me," Nayeon continues. "His name is Yongbok."
"You always wanted kids." Jeongyeon smiles bitterly. She remembers there was a time when she was a part of those future plans. "I'm happy for you." Jeongyeon is such a terrible liar.
"I wish I was," Nayeon whispers.
Jeongyeon can't help herself; she reaches over and pulls Nayeon to her and it feels like she's finally broken the surface and taken her first breath after being underwater for so long.
Nayeon sobs and her tears soak through Jeongyeon's shirt, dampening her skin.
"I should have never left you," Nayeon cries.
Where would they be now if she hadn't? Would they be married with a child of their own? Jeongyeon thinks so. She'd give up anything for it to be their reality.
But the woman in her arms, the one that still has her heart after all this time, has a son and a husband waiting on her. Jeongyeon gathers herself, pulling back together the broken pieces of her heart one more time, and pulls away from the only woman she'll ever love.
