Jed drove hastily through the mostly empty roads. We would be in much more danger if this was a bigger town, but since it's small, Jed used that to his advantage. He sped all the way to our workplace.
He pulled up to a complete disaster. Police cars and ambulances circled the building. I still didn't know what happened. All I knew was that there was a murder. I held back any theories I had until Jed parked the car, and we both stepped out.
Everyone around us was rushing around. A few people stayed back, crying in their hands as the chaos proceeded around them. Jed grabbed my hand, taking my attention away from the mourning people to the building itself.
The building stood tall with a newfound menacing aura. Today, it felt dark as we approached the front door. Jed pushed it open, holding it for me to walk in.
My mouth hung open the second I found out why everyone was panicking outside. My hand trembled as it covered my mouth and nose. The smell was encouraging me to stop breathing altogether.
Right over the front desk was a body. It was completely hollowed out, just a shell of what used to be a human. His arms and legs were nailed into the wall along with the skin of this stomach that was opened wide, showing off the handy work of the murderer. Blood made a constant dripping sound from the corpses' boots, and most of the blood had already spilled out onto the floor.
'Creep' was written in blood over the man's head, making a frame for the 'artwork'. The corpses face was still in tact. It was held up by the man's hair, showing off his features. On a closer look, I could figure out who it was. It was the man from the other day. I could barely even remember his name.
This murder has to belong to the Ghostface. Somehow, he heard what the man had said to me and went for him. I know he's always watching, but I didn't expect him to act so quickly. Let alone murder somebody this fast. Danny must have been really pissed off if he killed this man while pretending to be dead.
I started to gag the more I looked at the grotesque details of the murder, stumbling outside. Jed stayed to photograph the crime scene so he could write about it. I really hope Henry doesn't ask me to write about this.
I sat down outside, breathing in the fresh air. I was just on the curb, not the most comfortable spot, but it was good enough. My head hung low. My hands held my forehead as I looked at the ground. I felt light-headed after seeing the body.
I stayed in the same position until Jed came back out. He sat beside me and placed a hand on my shoulder in a comforting way. I glanced over to see a body bag being carried out of the building along with the special cleaners going inside.
"Let's get you home. I think you've seen enough today." Jed said at almost a whisper when he spoke to me.
I nodded my head, watching him get up from his seated position and holding a hand out to me. I took his hand and let him help me up to my feet. I thought I wouldn't see something like this for a while, and yet here I was. Ghostface didn't waste any time.
We walked back to the car in silence, neither of us wanting to talk about what we had just witnessed. Jed seemed perfectly fine about the situation, but it is his job to photograph crime scenes. I doubt this is the worst thing he's ever seen.
The drive back to my house was the same quiet. It made me uncomfortable to be this quiet, but at the same time, I couldn't bring myself to talk.
It was quiet all the way until Jed pulled into my driveway. He turned off the car and continued to sit quietly beside me.
"Are you okay?" He broke the silence.
"I'm alright..." I trailed off into my thoughts before sharing them with Jed. "Do you think it's my fault?"
"Why would it be your fault?" Jed asked, looking over at me.
"It said creep above him, and he was acting like that to me just the day before." I shared my reasoning, avoiding bringing Ghostface into the conversation.
"He probably acted like that to every girl he met. He just messed with the wrong one." Jed did his best to comfort me. "Let's go inside."
We both got out of the car slowly, our brains using more power than our legs while we thought about the experience. I unlocked the front door and stepped inside, looking down at the ground.
"What is that?" Jed's voice grabbed my attention while I locked the door behind us.
"What -?" I completely stopped in my tracks when I saw the lump of red in the middle of my living room floor.
"They said every organ was accounted for except for the heart." Jed's voice sounded ominous as I pieced the puzzle together.
"Is that his...?" I couldn't bring myself to finish that sentence as I stared at the heart on my floor.
Jed didn't answer me. Instead, he grabbed his phone from his pocket. I could hear him dial a number and start to talk.
"We found the missing heart." I zoned out while he continued talking. I could tell he was sharing my address and our names. Other than that, I could only hear the faint ringing in my ears and my heartbeat rise as I watched the remaining blood harden and clot onto my floor.
In a way, Danny literally gave me a heart. That only worsens my anxiety for what he might do in the future. If this was even his doing.
