Eric's POV
Luca had vanished into the forest, running with an urgency I had never seen before. Camellia and I stood there, watching helplessly as our Alpha disappeared into the darkness. "Why did you let him go?" Camellia asked, her voice laced with frustration. I let out a sigh, running a hand through my hair. "You know very well, Camii, I couldn't do anything." "You’re his Beta, his second-in-command! But before that, you’re his best friend," she argued.
I turned to look at her, my expression hard. "Camii, you won't understand. Hell, even I can't fully understand what he's going through. He lost his mate tonight. The pain he's feeling... it’s not something either of us can stop." She clenched her jaw, clearly unhappy with my response. "I put a tracker on him," I added. "We can track his location." "Then why don’t we go after him now?" she suggested. "No," I said firmly. "We wait. He's stronger than both of us. He needs time alone. Let’s give him a few hours, and then we'll see. In the meantime, go and train the warriors. We might need them." She hesitated but then nodded.
"On it, Beta." I watched her disappear into the packhouse before sighing heavily. My body felt tense, my mind exhausted. I needed a drink. I headed inside, grabbed a bottle of whiskey, and poured myself a glass. I took a slow sip, allowing the alcohol to burn its way down my throat. The past few months had been hell for Luca. First, Isabelle was taken. Then, all this chaos started. I had only seen him this broken once before—when his father died. He barely ate. Barely slept. Dark circles had formed under his eyes, his face hollowed out from stress. His once well-groomed beard was now unkempt. The only thing that seemed to keep him going was work—burying himself in endless tasks just to escape reality. It was painful to watch. Now that he had finally found Isabelle, I knew I couldn't stop him. He loved her more than anything. I just hoped he brought her back safely.
"What's going on, mister?" I turned around to see my mate, Amelia, standing at the doorway with her arms crossed. "Nothing. Just some pack work," I muttered, swirling the drink in my glass. She rolled her eyes. "Yeah, pack work." Her tone made it clear she wasn’t buying my excuse. "Look, Eric, I'm your mate. Why haven’t you been sharing anything with me since Luna was kidnapped?" she demanded. "I know you care about the Alpha, but I can’t keep watching you like this. You’re distant, distracted… "Even when we try to be intimate, your mind is somewhere else." She looked away, hurt flashing in her eyes. "My wolf and I don’t like this. If you don’t want me, then fine." I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling a headache coming on. "It’s nothing, Amelia. I’ve just been thinking about Luca and the pack. That’s all." She scoffed. "Right. Just the pack." Before I could say anything else, she turned on her heel. "I’m going to my room." I let her go. I wasn’t in the mood to argue. I checked Luca’s tracker again. He was still in the same location, an abandoned building three hours away. My gut told me something was wrong, but I decided to wait a little longer.
"You should give it more time, Eric. If Alpha doesn’t return soon, we’ll take action," my wolf suggested. "Yeah… okay." I decided to sleep for a bit, knowing I'd need my strength later. Instead of going to my room, I crashed in one of the guest rooms, too exhausted to deal with Amelia.
A few hours passed.
I was in the middle of a deep sleep when a sharp knock jolted me awake. I groggily rubbed my eyes. "Come in." The door swung open, and Camellia rushed in, looking anxious. "Eric, it’s been twelve hours. Alpha still hasn’t come back." That woke me up instantly. I grabbed my phone, checking Luca’s location. It's still the same. He hadn’t moved. It was like he was stuck in one place. Something was definitely wrong. I shot out of bed. "Gather the warriors, Camellia. We’re going after him." She didn’t hesitate. "On it." As she ran off, I grabbed my weapons. My heart pounded in my chest. Luca, please be okay.
