Shoupe nearly rolled his eyes when he saw who stepped out of the car, but the Pogues led him into the construction house anyway, devastated to find it empty. No body. Shoupe looked at the teens with disbelief.

"Look, it was right here, and this is where that maniac claimed his next victim. Right there," Kie told the man.

"Uh-huh, his next victim?" Shoupe asked.

"Yeah."

"Right. How long ago did you say it happened?"

JJ kneeled to the wood below, running his hands along to find any trace of blood. Wyatt suspected the rain helped clean that up.

"Forty-five minutes ago, Shoupe," JJ answered.

"Okay," Shoupe scribbled something down on his notepad. "And so, Ward Cameron just popped one off and shot him?"

"Yes," Kie sighed.

"Execution style? And then cleaned it all up in forty-five minutes?"

"Yeah," Kie nodded.

"Obviously," Pope said.

"Well, I'm sure the rain was a big help, Shoupe," Wyatt told him.

"We filmed the entire thing," Kie said, making Wyatt cringe.

That got Shoupe's attention. "You filmed it?"

"Yes, but we can't show it to you because I stepped on JJ's hand, and then he kicked Pope, and then Pope dropped the camera 'cause it's a piece of shit, and it broke."

Wyatt gave her a look. Not a great explanation. It sounded made up. Wyatt would've lied, made it sound believable.

"Um," Pope cut in, "this is a telephoto, and we needed to get a long-distance image, and– and... and I fell, and it broke, the video is basically unusable. But– But– But we were there, and we're wit–"

"So the dog ate your homework?" the sheriff asked, completely not believing their story.

"No, Shoupe," Kie sighed. "I know it sounds like–"

"Look, I don't know what you kids expect me to do with this. All right? You drag me out here in the middle of the night for a whole lotta nothin'–"

"No, it's not nothing!" Kie tried.

Shoupe held up a hand to silence her. "Except for some crazy stories about how Ward Cameron's out on a random killing spree."
