Thunder cracked in the sky and rain pattered on the windows as the bus shook under Aaliyah and the rest of the cross-country team. They were on their way to a retreat. She sat in the seat across from Scott and Stiles. They were in the very last row of seats, Aaliyah was happy because her seat was smaller than the rest and it only fit one person. The girls coach was sick and had to stay back so Coach Finstock was the only adult other than the driver.
Coach blew his whistle telling a kid to get back in his seat. Aaliyah winced slightly at the loud noise temporarily pulling her from her thoughts before she went right back to them. She kept going over in her mind what happened the night before. She went over every detail of the day trying to figure out if what had happened could've been stopped. Someone had died and it wouldn't leave her mind.
Derek died. And it was her fault. It seemed to be a recurring theme lately.
"Hey, Aaliyah. Hey." Stiles leaned over the isle tapping her shoulder to get her attention.
"Yeah?"
"Anachronism." Stiles told her the next vocab word. They thought it would be smart to study on the bus, since they had nothing else to do.
"Something that exists out of its normal time."
"Nice. Okay, Scott. Next word. Incongruous."
"Um, can you use it in a sentence?"
"Yes, yes I can. It's completely incongruous that we're sitting in a bus right now, on our way to some stupid cross-country meet after what just happened. Incongruous."
