MK slept soundly in his bed, Mei curled up on the floor with pillows and blankets, while Sun Wukung relaxed in a love chair, engrossed in reading the hidden stories left by the second leader. MK awoke to find the clock reading noon and groggily got up, nearly tumbling down the stairs. Wukung’s tail snaked out and caught MK, steadying him. “You should be careful, kid,” Wukung said, not even glancing up from his book.“Oh, sorry Monkey King,” MK mumbled, glancing at Wukung’s puzzled expression.
“Who the hell is Monkey King?” Sun Wukung asked, furrowing his brow.
MK hesitated. “I’m sorry, it’s just that most gems on Earth, and even humans, refer to you as the Monkey King. There are many stories about you, and I didn’t want to offend—”
Wukung’s staff materialized, gently tapping MK on the head. “It’s fine, kid. Call me what you want. After I find Macaque and the Diamond Bull King and his bride, I’ll bubble their gems and finally retire,” Wukung said, making his staff disappear and looking back at MK, who seemed lost in thought. “What happened to Red Son?” MK asked, turning to the sunstone, who looked equally confused before his expression brightened.
“Oh, the Red Diamond? He’s fine, just bubbled and hidden somewhere no one will ever find him,” Wukung said, scratching himself as he observed MK’s contemplative state. “Anyway, you should get some more sleep and not worry about the diamond, alright?” MK nodded, turned around, walked ten steps, and promptly fell asleep on the floor.
Mei woke up at 9:00 PM, drawn to the delicious smell of waffles. She jumped up and hurried downstairs, only to trip and do an acrobatic maneuver, landing on her feet. She spotted MK still asleep when a staff tapped her on the head. Turning to see Wukung, who had made his staff disappear, Mei frowned.
“Don’t wake him up. Staying fused with someone for months is very stressful. He needs his rest,” Wukung said, his gaze shifting from Mei to MK.
“Well, are you going to eat breakfast?” Mei asked, raising an eyebrow.
Wukung shrugged. “Sure, why not? This planet has great food.” He leaped into the air, attempting a backflip but ended up tumbling down the stairs. Mei dashed behind him, helping him up.
Everyone enjoyed waffles, with Wukung sitting apart from the group. When MK finally made it downstairs, everyone had finished eating but Mei had made him a plate of waffles in which he devoured very quickly. The others exchanged glances, surprised by his ravenous appetite, but remained silent.
The five gems spent the day showing Wukung the new ways of Earth. Mei admitted to MK that she had once had a crush on Red Son before he betrayed them.
That night, MK stayed up in bed, gazing out at the balcony. He slipped out of bed, opened the glass door, and stepped onto the balcony, breathing in the crisp mountain air. “Hey kid, why are you out here?” Wukung’s voice came from above. MK looked up to see the sunstone perched on the roof, swaying his tail in the wind and eating a peach.
“I don’t know, to be honest,” MK replied.
“You miss the Red Diamond, don’t you?” Wukung asked.
MK was taken aback. He had not expected Wukung to notice his feelings. “Don’t worry, kid. I’m not here to judge. I get it. Staying fused with someone for months can make it feel like a part of you is missing. It’ll take two or three weeks to get over this feeling. Just keep yourself distracted,” Wukung said, finishing his peach and jumping down to land gracefully beside MK.
“Also, since you have powers similar to mine and Macaque’s, I can teach you how to use my side of your powers. Alright? Now, get some sleep,” Wukung advised. As MK turned to head inside, Wukung placed a hand on his shoulder. “Meet me at the teleportation pad to go to the training ground,” Wukung instructed.
MK nodded, went inside, and shut the door behind him. He made his way to his bed and fell asleep almost immediately. Meanwhile, Wukung flew off on his stardust cloud toward the island where MK had first met his fox friend, landing to find Nodlies waiting for him.
