Ezara POV
Over a year later...
"How is he doing?" I ask Vexel. He had just finished his training session with Mazavir. At first it was difficult for them to work together but eventually Mazavir got over his fear and Vexel learned to be more patient with him.
"He's learning." Vexel states, crossing his arms. "He's not the easiest student I've had." I could see the concern on his face. "I have to be careful with the way I teach him. With my other students, like Vayle, I would fight them. Mazavir is still healing." I understood what he meant. I could still see the frightened look in Mazavir's eyes sometimes.
"I've noticed." I state with a frown. "He isn't like he used to be around you."
"He listens to what i have to say and he doesn't speak to me like he used to." Vexel states. "It makes him harder to teach when he doesn't have questions to ask and he's too scared to fight me. I've had to have Vayle fight him so I could see what he's learned, if anything."
"He's getting better though." I state, looking past Vexel to watch Vayle and Mazavir fight. Whatever he attacked with, Vayle easily countered or dodged. He wasn't as strong as she was.
"He still thinks he's doing this to fight Lilith." Vexel says and I look back at him. A concerned look crosses his face. "I don't think he realizes it will take longer then he thinks for her to return. She will take time to reform."
"It's good for him to have a reason to learn. If he thinks he's doing it to stop Lilith, it'll give him a reason to work harder." I respond, walking towards Mazavir and Vayle. I watch as they return blasts of magic. Vexel stands beside me.
We watch for a few minutes until Mazavir started to get frustrated and more erratic. Vexel walks forward. "Alright." He states and Mazavir pauses. I saw a small flash of fear cross his face but it was gone quick. "You still have some work to do." Vexel says. He either didn't see Mazavir's fear or he was ignoring it.
Mazavir just nods. I've seen a major change in the way he acts. He's been trying to control his anger. Vexel was quick to step in if he was starting to get angry. Mazavir was too scared of Vexel to let his anger get the better of him.
Vexel crosses his arms. "We'll do this more tomorrow, you should rest." He says to Mazavir. "We'll go hunting tomorrow. I think it's time you stated to learn how to manipulate corpses."
"You want me to raise the dead?" Mazavir asks.
Vexel shakes his head. "You're not strong enough for that yet, Mazavir. You'll learn simple things, like learning how to explode a corpse or manipulate it to help incapacitate your enemy. It will be a while before you'll learn to raise the dead. What I'm teaching you is still the basics. You need to master your connection with the living and the dead until you'll be able to do that. It's harder then it looks."
"It's not hard for you because you're a prime evil, right?" Mazavir asks. "You already deal with the dead."
Vexel frowns. "That's not who I am anymore." Vexel states, looking at the ground. I could tell he was still fighting a war with himself about that.
"It must make it easier though." Mazavir continues. "You used to torture the dead. You manipulated them to your will and now you just make them fight for you."
Vexel turns away from him and faces me. He rarely let his emotions show but I could tell he was irked by what Mazavir said. "As I said, that's not who I am anymore."
"Do they remember you?" Mazavir continues. "Do they ever know what you are?"
"Enough." Vexel says, turning back to Mazavir. "The dead don't speak unless I will them to. When we raise the dead, we raise them as thralls. They know nothing more then we command them to know."
