Mazavir POV

"So, where exactly do the vampires stay?" I ask. Arlex and I were camping for the night. We could've quickly made our way to the vampire hideout but I was still skeptical about using my new vampiric power.

"The City of the Ancients." Arlex responds, sitting on the ground with me. "No one dares venture down there. Even if they did, the place is crawling with disgusting demons. I hate going down there myself."

"How do we get there?" I ask. We were now somewhere in the middle of Fractured Peaks. I lay down on the ground. Arlex lays down beside me.

"We'll be there tomorrow. We'll have to go through the darkened pass." She pauses for a moment. "That too is crawling with disgusting demons. No wonder that's the safest place for vampires." She shrugs. "When we get there, let me doing the talking. Rycaria won't be happy to see me again. She's also skeptical about new people."

"I understand." I respond. She glances over at me, then looks to the stars. It was a beautiful night despite the snow on the ground. Leafless tress surrounded us and blocked out most of the darkened sky.

"It's been a long time since I slept under the stars." She says. "I was always surrounded by other vampires who preferred to be sleeping in the City of the Ancients." She glances at me again. "I almost forgot what it's like."

I offer a nervous smile. "I do this all the time." I respond. "Mostly with Ezara and Vexel." I look back to the sky. "I appreciate you teaching me about these new abilities. I've learned a lot."

"I bit you, it's the least I could do. Speaking of that, don't use any necromancy while we're there. I can smell it on you, but I don't think Rycaria will think much of it. If she sees you use it, she'll think you're a spy and she'll probably kill you."

"Good to know." I respond. "No necromancy, got it." Then I pause. "What do you mean, "smell it on me"?" I ask.

"All necromancers smell like death. Especially Vexel. I can tell he's been doing it for a long time." She responds. "That's why we're good at hunting them. When I found you and him, I could tell he was powerful, that's why I went after you."

I didn't say anything else, but I was thinking about that. I roll over and let the darkness consume me.

"Arlex." Rycaria states. "Good of you to return to us. Though I would've been fine if you didn't." Rycaria was covered up. She had a hood over her head and her face was drowned in shadow. Her bright blue eyes shone through the darkness. "Who's your little pet?"

"Mazavir. He's the one I bit. He answers to me." I glance at Arlex as she said that but I don't say anything.

"Really?" Rycaria responds, crossing her arms. She was unconvinced. "I told you to stay away from Vexel, now you bring him?" She gestures to me.

"He's not a spy, Rycaria." Arlex says, rolling her eyes. "He's a vampire now. He's with us."

Rycaria looks at me. She takes a few steps closer, inspecting me. "He is a vampire." She concludes. "But I don't trust him. He worked with Vexel."

Arlex opens her mouth to speak but I cut her off. "Vexel almost killed me many times." I respond. "I have just as much reason to be with you as I do him. He never cared about me. In fact, he probably still wants me dead."

"Fine." Rycaria says after a moment of thinking. "But, you'll have to prove yourself. I won't let just anyone join us."

I pause. What did I have to offer? I touch my hand to my breastplate. I pull out the sheet of parchment paper that had the prophecy written on it. I glance at Arlex then back at Rycaria. She looked at me with interest.
