Chapter 111. Rex

" Yeah! Me! Nice to meet you finally! It took forever for you to actually connect to me!"

" You're a talking wolf?"

The wolf licked his paw and started to rub his head as he answered my question.

" Yup! I'm Rex! I'm a Courier Wolf!"

Rex announced his job proudly.

" I'm John. Nice to meet you!"

I introduced myself to Rex. Then I decided to start asking a few questions. That has seemed to become my go to thing when I first meet a Spirit that wants to form a contract with me.

" So, you deliver messages to people?"

" Yup, we do deliver a lot of messages, but the older wolves of my family also deliver items like books or pieces of metal."

" I see. No offense Rex, but is that all you can do? Do you have some kind of magic?"

Rex looked at me with his head turned a bit to the side.

" My family has tracking magic and magic to enhance our senses during nighttime travel, but we don't have any kind of combat magic. For fights... We really just have our paws and our fangs really."

Rex showed me sharp claws, each one the size of my hand by itself. His individual fangs were the size of my head. Rex wagged his tail as he showed off his claws and fangs.

" See? I doubt anyone would want to try fighting us!"

Rex spoke proudly as he moved his paws around.

" I suppose so. Say, Rex... Why did you let me contact you? Did you hear about Lily contracting with me and wanted to see who I was?"

" Oh, you're contracted to Queen Lily? Wow! That's amazing!"

Rex continued wagging his tail, but this seemed like new news to him.

" Wait, Rex, if not Lily... Why me then?"

Rex stopped wagging his tail and wiggled his ears before speaking to me.

" Well, no real reason."

" What do you mean?"

" Well, I'm not an especially strong Spirit kin or anything. I assume we reached each other the same way you matched with your first Spirit. Sometimes Summoners and Spirits just connect to each other. Then it comes down to the Summoner being strong enough to connect with the Spirit with his or her meditation. At least, that's what Grandpa says!"

" Ah okay. So, like with Paula."

I guess I built up weird expectations with Lily and Gil. I look to Rex and begin to speak with a smile.

" Alright then Rex! Are you sure you want to form a contract with me?"

" Yeah! I think it'll be fun! I should let you know now, but I'm not much of a fighter. However, if you ever need a message delivered to someone or need me to track something or someone down, I'm the perfect choice!"

" Sounds good! I can already think of somethings I can use your help with!"

" Great! Let's be good friends then!"

I nodded my head and Rex came down from the higher ledge. We preformed the ceremony. I noticed something strange though and I begin to ask Rex about it.

" Hey Rex.... How old are you?"

" Hm? Oh I'm 8 this year! I just started my job as a courier! Treat me well Partner!"

" Ah that's what it was! Everyone else I'm contracted to had this feeling that they were older than me when we contracted each other. You're the first one who's younger than I am."
