—First Person POV.—

The next day arrived way too fast, with the morning light filtering through my window and bathing the room in a gentle glow.

I had just finished adjusting the last clasp of the borrowed dress when the clatter of hurried footsteps and a chorus of raised voices drifted through the heavy wooden door.

I froze and nearly considered hauling my ass through the window with the immediate thought of: Oh shit, they found out.

Just before I would've done that though, that single braincell left in my skull convinced me there would be no way for them to have found out—especially with all of the threatening and lies the Duke put in to make sure no one knew or spoke of the truth.

So I did the stupidest thing imaginable and half-closed the window, purposely leaving my escape route at the ready while I trekked across the room—now tentatively pressing an ear against the door.

I could still hear it—a scrambled rhythm of stomps and shouts echoing through the palace's stone corridors that threw closer with each passing second.

Choruses of "Get back here!" and "Stop running!" registered to my attention, causing my brows to furrow in confusion while a new swarm of curiosity buzzed to life in my head—

So, to fulfill my questions, I cracked the door open just a fraction and peered outside.

The scene before me had me blinking in surprise: a figure in a tattered cloak, came into view at the end of the corridor by literally landing on the wall, streaks of lightning following his path just before he launched off—barreling down the hall.

Throughout the movements, his hand held the top of his hood to keep it pulled down low over his face.

Even half-obscured by the worn fabric, I recognized the traveler immediately— And turning the corner a good distance behind him was a small crowd of guards in pursuit, their heavy boots pounding against the marble floor.

Before I could second-guess myself, I darted forward, snatched his left arm from, and yanked the man inside my room.

Izuku stumbled into me, breathless and wild-eyed, his cloak falling away to reveal a tousled mess of green hair and vivid, startled emerald eyes—which briefly caught mine as he pivoted with the momentum.

I could barely register his touch cradling my back just before I'm slammed back into the door— Thankfully, I think his hand took the brunt of the hit, because I felt no pain, just whiplash.

This action also caused the heavy piece of wood to ram closed behind us.

For a heartbeat, he was close enough that I could feel the frenzied rise and fall of his chest, smell the earthy blend of pine and citrus that clung to him like a lingering promise of the forest.
