—First Person POV.—

I turned the corner, the soft echo of sobs drifting down the corridor like a ghost wailing through stone—my brows drew together.

A part of me wanted to just ignore her and run off—but something in my gut tugged me forward as I cautiously lowered my voice "Hello?"

The woman flinched at the sound, her head snapping up just enough for me to catch a glimpse of her tear-streaked face in the moonlight—eyes wide, bloodshot, and brimming with something that looked an awful lot like guilt.

She sniffled but didn't stop, taking a long swig from a flask clutched tightly in her trembling hand.

"Why are you crying in the hallway?" I question and cast a glance around to make sure we're alone.

"Lady Daki is taking me back to my home," She slurred, her words thick and sluggish.

Oh, this is the murderers maidservant.

"Why's she taking you back?"

"I don't know why you're here— Did you come to work with me?" She grumbled "I always work alone."

"Why do you always work alone?" I kept my eyes steady on hers as she swayed and let out a breath "Is it warm in here?" She mumbled, patting the back of her hand against her flushed forehead.

Something was wrong— And I don't mean her being clearly drunk right now.

"Hey," I call, gentler this time "Why is Daki taking you home? Can you hear me?"

"She's taking me back," Her eyes were bloodshot, her cheeks unnaturally red—I'd seen men drink themselves into a stupor before, but this was guilt fermented into madness.

"Why is she taking you back?" I repeated.

"She wanted me to do it one more time, but I told her I.." Her eyes drifted down in shame "..I don't want to do it again."

"Do what again?"

She stumbled forward, bracing herself against the wall as a loud belch slipped from her and with it, her voice stammered out.

"I killed the Crowned Prince."

The breath caught in my throat, so sharp it felt like I'd swallowed a dagger.

"..What?"

Tears streaked her face now as she tripped on her own feet and I rushed forward—grabbing her elbow to keep her from falling face first on the floor "I killed him, I poisoned his mind."

My limbs went cold and I didn't dare interrupt her.

"I know who you are because I was just like you, your Lord told you to come here and pretend to be a lady," She muttered, wiping her nose on her sleeve "My lord told me to kill the Prince, I had no choice."
