—First Person POV.—

I stepped into the library, eyes casted downwards as the door was promptly shut behind me.

"Don't leave." Chancellor Ojiro had stated after not saying a single word to me the entire walk here.

I made my way from the door, brows furrowing towards the shadow that casted over my feet and making me glance up—gaze finally catching sight of the mass of paper before me.

The desk was covered head to toe in the little cranes I'd previously forgotten about.

I thought they were cleared away— But it looks like at some point afterwards the Prince had gotten back to folding more.

In fact, the pile had grown into an impossible sea of delicate origami that now overwhelmed every inch of his workspace.

My eyes flickered downward as my foot kicked something and there was a little paper crane with its head intact.

I knelt and carefully picked it up, tilting my head to inspect it for a moment.

Why..?

I clenched my jaw, tossing the piece of paper onto the pile before turning away and stepping to the large windows that overlooked the castle grounds.

My body leaned against the frame, peering out and watching as twilight gave way to the soft glow of lanterns along the main gates—there, a group of figures stood halted by guards, their murmurs lost in the cool night air.

I let my gaze fall, seeing how high I was before flickering back up to settle on the windows latch.

A million thoughts swam in my brain.

And just as I reached up to trace my fingers over the cool metal—my gaze caught sight of a familiar cloak at the gate.

I blinked, attention settling on the Traveler as my brows furrowed—not long after, a certain Prince made his way to the group and started talking with the guards for a moment.

With a firm gesture, the men stepped aside and allowed the group to pass through.

Squinting into the distance, I could just make out seven figures—a girl in a pointed witch hat chatting with a Dragon-Shifter, another girl with dark hair standing nearby, a man gleaming in silvery armor, and walking beside His Highness was a man draped in a blood-red cape.

As they drew closer, I caught sight of the cloaked figure within the Barbarians grasp and mentally counted eight people in total.

Right now, I was trying to focus on anything else.

I tried to tell myself it didn't matter, that it was pretend— That of all things, I wasn't supposed to let the damned Prince get close. But tonight, I'd seen it in his eyes and fuck, I wish he didn't choose me.
