—First Person POV.—
I sat in the Great Hall, listening to the vibrant music filling the room—His Highness had invited a troupe of traveling musicians to perform, and the walls were alive with their sound.
A woman's rich voice soared above the gentle drone of a hurdy-gurdy, while a lute, a flute, and a steady drummer provided the perfect counterpoint.
It was almost similar to the festival music they'd play back in Kyushu—or maybe I was just getting a little homesick.
Beside me, Lady Itsuka sat with her eyes closed, silently basking in the probably unfamiliar melodies—I smiled before continuing to snack on a few of the desserts put out along the table.
When the final song ended, I glanced up, face stuffed with cake and deadpanning when I caught a certain Prince standing a few feet away—mismatched eyes staring at me like usual.
I paused mid-bite before he turned away and I quickly snapped my attention to Lady Itsuka, who was now engaged in a conversation with the Duke of Sadoshima across the hall.
My eye twitched.
You're not supposed to be talking to Tetsu, you're supposed to be winning the damned Prince's favor!
I internally cried—with only three days left in this castle, I really need her to lock in.
Before I could continue stuffing my face, a familiar figure drifted into the hall—her clouded eyes roamed the room with confusion and a slight furrow in her brow.
I glanced around before pushing myself up quietly and made my way to her at the back of the room "Hey, Miss Todoroki.?" I cringed with the question but kept my voice gentle in the midst of the loud voices around us.
"Rei," Her long lashes flutter as she glances at me "You can call me Rei."
"Oh, thank you, can I help you with anything?" I awkwardly question, gaze flickering up and across the crowd to see if I can catch sight of Hagakure— She'd know what to do, right?
"I'm looking for my son, Tōya," She explains with a soft smile gracing her features "But, who are all these people?"
She turned slightly before pausing and her grayish-brown eyes lit up under the lighting "Maybe he's with Enji?"
Oh, another name I should probably know.
"Come on, let's head to the kitchen and get you something to eat." I suggest, reaching out a tentative hand for her and her gaze flickers down—staring before letting her soft grasp fall into mine.
She allowed me to lead her out of the hall and down the winding stairs to the kitchen.
As we entered the bustling area, the servants looked up expectantly and I cleared my throat "Could we have some food, please? Whatever you've got on hand will work."
