I can't stay with him any longer.

Khala's gaze lingered on Feyd's sleeping form, her heart torn between the desire to stay and the urgency of her mission. She played with the transceiver in her hands, a tangible reminder of the choices that lay ahead.

Khala didn't want to leave him. Again. But she knew deep down that it was necessary. He understood it too, the unspoken agreement hanging heavy in the air between them. There would be no room for error this time, no opportunity for their paths to intertwine once more. It wouldn't backfire like last time– he had chosen his path, so now she had to pursue her's. He would fight for his family. Well, she would fight for hers. In the desert.

Chani, it's me, Khala.

She sat still, waiting for an answer. Slowly, it started to display typing.

Khala? How can I be sure?

She would've laughed if it weren't for her situation. Always the cautious Chani she knew.

You have a preference to consuming the water of the sardaukar. We hunted Harkonnens together in the night when everyone was asleep, and got yelled at by Stilgar in the mornings. My eyes turned blue exactly a year after living with you.

Alright. What do you need?

I am coming to meet you. Where are you?

We're in the south, preparing to come north at war. A lot has happened.

Khala chewed her lip as she typed out her next sentence.

Has Paul... drank the water of life?

Yes. How did you know?

The Kwizats Haderach had not failed. She would no longer be obligated to carry Feyd's child. She didn't know why, but she felt disheartened from that.

Bene Gesserit prophecy. I'll come meet you in the south.

Alright.

She slipped off the bed carefully with the transceiver, trying to make as little sound as possible. She felt a shift and a small whine.

"Where are you going?" A voice murmured behind her. She froze, looking behind and seeing Feyd blinking up at her, bleary eyed. She watched him, admired the faint but present freckles on his pale, chiseled face. He observed her back, realization dawned on him every second.

Avoiding his searching eyes, she turned her gaze to the window, where the expanse of Arrakeen stretched out before them. Her voice, barely above a whisper, broke the silence. "You know where I'm going," she said softly.

As Khala stood there, locked in Feyd's continued silence, she could feel the weight of their shared history pressing down upon them. She knew that their paths diverged in that moment, that their loyalties lay with opposing factions destined to clash in the coming storm of war.

As she turned to face him, Khala found herself ensnared by the intensity of Feyd's gaze. Once a kaleidoscope of ideas and colours when she had first looked through them, now it was like a pit of emptiness, shaped by the last few years of his life. Hope struggled to survive there under all the suffering he had gone through, all the trauma he had endured from those he had trusted.

The weight of their shared silence hung heavy in the air, suffocating them both with its unspoken truth. Each heartbeat echoed like a drumbeat, a somber rhythm underscoring the inevitable parting that lay before them.
