Another day, another tunnel of the mine.
He hits the wall with his pickaxe, watching the debris flying backwards towards him, turning his face at the last possible second. He hears the girl working next to him falter and fall from exhaustion, but before he can help her up, the taskmaster comes over and whips her back, a scream ripping through the young girl's throat, leaving her whimpering.
He wishes he could do something, but there's nothing he can actually do about it. Not if he wants to stay alive. The taskmaster looks back at him and he immediately looks back at the wall, hearing the girl still whimpering but starting to stand up slowly.
He is ashamed that he isn't fighting to get out of there and help the others trapped in those mines with him, but after seeing so many die just because they looked at their taskmasters the wrong way, he knows he has to bide his time and stay alive.
He hasn't lost hope that he will be able to escape the mines and be reunited with those he loves, but he will also be the first one to admit that, after so long down there, his hope is starting to fail him.
