-MONDAY, JANUARY 16TH, 2023.-
School is off for today since it's currently Martin Luther King Jr. Day today as I wake up in my cozy bed at around 10 AM, I stretch and yawn before looking out the window to see the snowfall outside. It's not as heavy as usual, but it's enough to give the town a peaceful atmosphere. Unfortunately, I soon realize that I'm alone in the house. I check my phone to see a text from Noelle, letting me know that she's gone to see her grandmother in West Virginia for a week. I sigh, knowing that I won't be able to see her during that time. As I make my way to the kitchen, I notice that my friend Risk is still sound asleep on the couch. He's always been a heavy sleeper, so I don't disturb him as I grab a quick breakfast. It's not much, but it'll hold me over until I figure out what to do for the day. With nothing else to occupy my time, I decide to take a stroll through the town. As I step outside, I'm immediately met by the cold, snowy weather. I don't let it stop me, though, and I bundle up in my winter clothes before venturing out into town.
As I walk, I notice that there aren't many people out and about today, likely due to the weather. But that doesn't bother me. I enjoy the peace and quiet of the snowy streets, and the cold air feels refreshing on my face. Despite the lack of people, I can't help but feel an air of excitement at the prospect of spending some time alone. It's not often that I get to simply wander around without a purpose, and the feeling is invigorating. I was walking through the snow-covered streets of Hometown, feeling the cold air in my lungs and the winter sun on my face. It had been snowing all morning and it seemed like it wasn't going to stop anytime soon, but that didn't bother me. In fact, I was enjoying the solitude of being out in the snow by myself. As I made my way towards the park, I suddenly heard a sound. It sounded like someone was walking behind me. I turned around and saw Susie walking towards me with a grim expression on her face, her arms crossed.

Susie- "What are you doing out here, nerd?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Jack- "I'm just taking a walk, why does it matter to you?"

Susie- "You think you're so cool, walking around by yourself on a day like this. Well, let me show you a thing or two."

Before I knew it, she had charged at me, her fists raised. I was caught off guard and didn't have time to react before she hit me in the face. I staggered back, clutching my face in pain. But before she could hit me again, I heard a sound behind her. It was Risk, coming to my rescue. He pulled out his sword and stabbed Susie in the back of her left knee, causing her to collapse to the ground and scream in agony, hurling swear and curse words a lot. As the blood poured out of the wound on her knee, I couldn’t believe what I had just witnessed. I turned to Risk, who had holstered his sword and was now looming over Susie. I then got up as Risk helped me get up.

“Why did you do that?” I asked, my voice wavering.

Risk grabbed me by the arm, his grip tight. “Because you don’t know how to take care of yourself,” he said, his tone harsh. “You’re lucky you didn’t get yourself killed.” I flinched at his words, feeling small and vulnerable. I opened my mouth to defend myself, but no words came out. Instead, I just nodded, my gaze fixed on the ground.
Risk sighed and let go of my arm, his expression softening ever so slightly.

Risk- “Come on, let’s go home. But you need to stay inside from now on. No more going out alone, got it?”

I nodded once more, feeling like I had just been scolded by a parent.
As we walked from the hill, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of gratitude for Risk. Despite his harsh words, he had saved me from Susie, and for that, I was truly grateful. I just needed to learn to be more careful in the future, and not let my guard down around Susie again.
